I have a 383 that I bought maybe 2 years ago, just checked the numbers because I might have to sell it, and casting #'s say it has 400/440 heads. Its a 70 block, and I think 74 or 75 heads. Just wondering why, or if there might have been a benefit from them?

Who knows... my guess someone cracked an original and that's what got put on... most of the BB open chamber heads are the same with different cast numbers. Don't worry about it

Edit: that late may have hardened seats (unlead friendly) so... that may explain the swap too.

I'm at work and don't have the #'s, but remembered the casting date was 9.14.70, and looked at the head #'s, and it was 3462346. Just wondering what I had.

'71 (model year) eng & I believe 346's replaced the 906's sometime in 70 or 71 so I'd say all original.
