I've seen a couple of PHR articles where they run project cars at Fontana after dyno-testing the engines at Westech. The on-track results typically look pretty disappointing after seeing the published dyno #s, which IMO means that the atmospheric conditions at Fontana are really crappy... or the dyno #s from Westech are really as "happy" as a number of people on here have suspected for years.

Examples (IIRC):
- 625 HP big-block Chevy in 3700# Chevelle --> low 11s at 118 mph
- 715 HP big-block Chevy in 3600+ # Chevelle --> 10.6s @ 128 mph

Can somebody who's raced at Fontana provide some actual temp, humidity & barometric pressure and / or density altitude #s for when they've been there? Is the track at a much higher elevation than I remember from where I recall Fontana is in SoCal?

Inquiring minds want to know!

According to the NHRA Fontana isn't even a factored track. So its close enough to sea level conditions that they don't waste their time coming up with a correction factor.

EVERY engine combination I've read about that was on their dyno put out way more power than I expected it to. I also agree that the dragstrip testing they do does not coincide with the power numbers they get off that dyno. I remember Steve Dulcich built a 440, think he called it the mild mannered mauler or something like that. I remember reading that article and thinking this is the last time I pay any attention to an engine buildup that's tested at that facility. CHIP

Fontana is in an industrial area that has very poor oxygen content. As a matter of fact it is on Kaiser's old plant.

The air is dirty with who knows what is in it. And in the summer it can get way up there in temp and bad windy conditions.

It's not Mission, by all means.

I've had better air in Phoenix than in Fontana..

Fontanas air.....SUCKS!!!!!...compared to Bakersfield or Sacramento or Infineon here in Calif. I'm usually .2 slower at Fontucky than Famoso...

Dyno queens that make steller numbers for the combo, and run like there 100 hp down to other guys combo...
Thats why I never thought dyno numbers ment the world...

I good close frined of mine dyno his small block stroker motor, with W2 heads..It has some compression, but thats about it, flat tappet cam, beehive springs, No dominator...The engine made a hair over 600hp on the dyno, the car runs 10.0's at 3200 lbs with driver..
I would say this dyno is in line on real world numbers...

If this engine was dyno out at Westech's..it would break the 750 mark hu?
Until a combo runs a respectable MPH at the local track, you cant have bragging rights in my book...

And I'm usually .2 slower at 75-80 than MIR, but my 600 HP engine in a 3700+ car runs 123+ even at 75-80.

10.805 @ 123.55 / <No Weather #s>
10.756 @ 123.49 / 78*, 47%, 29.35"
10.754 @ 123.69 / 74*, 53%, 29.35"
10.786 @ 123.83 / 72*, 50%, 29.37"
10.860 @ 123.76 / <No Weather #s>

In the peak summer heat and humidity these would take a noticeable hit... at least another tenth off.

I'm in the Mid-Atlantic area where some of the tracks are pretty close to sea level (IIRC 75-80 is approx. 400 ft., where as MIR is something like 80 ft.). I have no idea how the atmospheric conditions vary across the country, although I'm sure even what I've listed above would be considered good for many tracks at higher elevations.

I've seen some unbelievible dyno numbers published and never any track times to back them up.

What I was able to find about the elevation is:

"The city's <Fontana> listed elevation, measured from the northeast corner of the intersection of Upland Avenue and Sierra Avenue, downtown by City Hall, is 1,237 feet (377 m). However, the highest elevation within the city limits is approximately 2,600 feet (792.48m), in the northernmost part of the Panorama neighborhood of Hunter's Ridge. The lowest point within the city limits is approximately 840 feet (256.03m), at the intersection of Etiwanda and Philadelphia avenues, the extreme southwestern corner of the city.[26] This difference in elevation is due to the southward slope of the Lytle Creek alluvial fan."

Where exactly the track is w/ respect to the info above I have no idea. It's definitely not Bandimere, but it's not MIR, either.

Sorry, but chassis dyno #s don't mean anything to me.

My point was that sometimes the dyno #`s don`t jive w/the timeslips. Also, those altitudes you posted don`t mean diddly squat due to the baro #`s and humidity and I`ve seen that track at 3500-4000+ feet..........

That was exactly the reason why I asked this in my opening post: "Can somebody who's raced at Fontana provide some actual temp, humidity & barometric pressure and / or density altitude #s for when they've been there?"

Gotcha....And as stated,that track can see 4000ft not to mention the santa anna head/side winds. I don`t really like that track but it`s about all we have around here and who knows for how long.

Track elevation is actually about 1100 ft.
The last couple of times I was there, DA was reported in the mid 3500's.

I've got all my run info on my flash drive at home, and I can post some later.

I'm still figuring out what the car likes best, but so far, I've gone 9.96 @ 135 at Famoso, and 9.97 @ 135 at Fontana on similar DA days. Famoso is at 860 ft and is in the middle of an agricultural area.

I have been told by a local SS racer that Fontana has "dead" air, and he runs .2 quicker at Pomona than he does at Fontana with similar DA.

Fontana may also be "slightly" uphill. Not sure on that one though.

I don't have a weather station, so that site is where I get my weather data (after the fact) for my log book.
