yes...they can be swapped out...
did that with a friends 4x4..we found a 4x2 and swapped his tailshaft from 4x4 on to a 4x2..

I know 46RE's are garbage, but why would I need to freshen up a 40K mile tranny??
and I thought you could drop the OD unit off the back of the trans with out busting the case open
i didn't get a chance to reply earlier because i got a call as i was responding . ..
First off what makes you think the trans is garbage ? It's a 727 with an OD on the back.
Also you are correct , OD pops off the back , you don't have to disassemble the entire trans to make the swap as the mainshaft is the same length whether it's a 4x2 or a 4x4 UNLIKE a 727 ... BUT there is a selective shim that goes in there that you are supposed to measure for with a special tool and install the correct one . Now you could just use the shim that is in the tail you want to swap on , but it may not work properly ...

They can be swapped without pulling the trans.
There is a way to check for the correct shim thickness without the special tools but it is hard to describe. If you swap the piston off the back of the case when you swap the OD unit you should be fine.

You don't measure to the piston on the trans , the tool goes across the face of the OD unit where it bolts to the trans and you measure down to the direct clutch unit ... I think I'd have to dig out my manual ... The tool is a set thickness so the shim table in the manual would need to be adjusted accordingly if you used something a different thickness ...

The one and only 46RE I has was so soft, I thought I was driving a mid 70's caddy.
its all over the net that the 46re spits the kick down anchor, and loses 2nd.
seems like it picked up a ton of bad habits with the OD and the electronics!
plus this ones been a thorn in my side for 2 weeks.
now all we need to do is figure out how I can get this 2wd trans to work in my buddies 4wd truck!
thanks to you and all the others for the 411

Actually, you left out the two most common failures. The high clutch drum piston seals and the OD snap ring breakage....
I use a depth micrometer to determine correct shim thickness.

you have a point on it being soft , thank stupidity in engineering , instead of fixing a complaint , soft shifts , some genius decided to LOWER the line pressure
as far as it being ALL OVER THE NET .. the net is full of bad info .
212K on my diesel trans , NEVER spit out the front band anchor , never lost 2nd gear , never had the OD snap ring break ...

The reason they spit out the front anchor is people never adjust them any more, it was part of a regular service back in the day but in order to lower maintnance costs no body adjusts them, even the dealers. So now your band wears out and nothing there to take up the slack means the anchor thing falls out. Also in the name of soft shifts (witch is actually what the masses want) they switched to highly friction modified fluids like Mopar ATF+4 and it softens the shift but makes stuff burn up faster. My 2000 durango I was afraid to use the old fluid because it sounds like you have deffinate massive trans failure if you do but I filled it with type F a couple years ago and it has never shifted better.

My 2000 Cummins Ram has not had ATF 3 since the first fluid change I did at 30k miles , rebuilt the trans at 90k because some donkey I let that it for a blast to try outthe bigger turbo smoked my hi gear clutch pack . I drove it for 40k miles like that , it was fine as long as I didn't tow or hotrod it, ran dex 3 exclusively in it , it's got 122k on it since the rebuild still using dex 3 ...
As far as what the mASSES wanted , that's why the trans has a bad reputation ...
