I drove my Volare to TMP for the final OSCA race of the year. We couldn't really race saturday because of water coming out the track surface after the 1/8. We did T&T 1/8 mile. I made 2 passes and was fighting a bog in the engine. I got that sorted out. Its a stock 98 318 out of a Ram converted to carb with a air gap intake, headers, 904, 3.23 gears. It ran 9.2@76 mph in the 1/8. Sunday we do qualifying and it manages some 14.3's @ 95mph. It won't pull 3rd gear very well and turns 3800rpm at the stripe. Its a low gear 904 lockup trans. We stay till today because they could not finish the race on sunday. My first T&T pass today it broke something in the sure grip in the burnout. I made the pass but at the end of the track when I turned it was making some really violent banging. I pulled the axles for a look and they look fine. I guess the sure grip got smoked. Its a 8 3/4 with cone type sure grip. I'm guessing a better cam will really wake the engine up. Its power band is pretty short, with the 750 carb it pulled alot better but it could not handle the double pumper so I ran a 600 vac carb.

The last time it was on the scales it was 3450 with me in it with a 383, 727 and Dana 60. It could be 3300 now.
If I still had the Dana with 4.10's in it I'm sure it would have been faster.
I feel the intake is too big for the size of engine.
The 3" X pipe may be too big as well, it does have 2.5" mufflers after it and tail pipes.

cone sure grip, might be what happened to mine, something let go and caused the spider pin to walk out and start smacking the pinion.
I have a cam reground by bullet racing in my 318 magnum with an air gap and 3" Y pipe big single exhaust. the cam is 259adv, 208@.050", 127@.200", .316" lobe lift. it runs very hard up to 5500 (about the highest I've spun it). I'm using hughes 1110 springs, stock pushrods, and stock rockers. with your 3.23 gearing I'd suggest finding another LA/magnum roller cam core and get this lobe ground onto it. I had mine done at bullet cams (www.bulletcams.com), talk to Tim there.

The airgap is not too big for it. The only RPM another manifold will make more tq is under 2000 and even a stock stall converter is going to stall that high.
Definately getting a lower gear will help. I am a big advocate of LU in a street strip car but if it is strip only then ditch the LU, you can do that with out pulling the trans, sort of. Might be able to try a shorter tire to get a few more RPM out of it and that will probalby help.

Mine broke the roll pin, allowing the shaft to spin in the carrier, it also made some wicked banging down the return road...

What do you think about the comp cams 210/220 @ .050 .512/.512?
Its going to be just a street car, I'm sick of the low gears for highway cruising. This 318 sounded out of steam cruising at 4000rpm with the 4.10's and 26" tire. The 904 has a 2500 stall converter. I got around 2700 out of it.
If the 8 3/4 is munched up I'll get 3.54 gears for the dana 60 and put it back in.

the comp cam is similar to my bullet cam..it is a tad less aggressive ramp. duration on mine (adv/.050/.2) is 259/208/127, while the comp is 264/210/127. it'll probably be a little rumpier than my cam from an idle standpoint, but make similar power.
if you're looking for a comp cam, I'd maybe look at the XR65HR..the intake lobe for that is 265/216/136...should make more upper RPM power than the comp you listed, but with similar manners...
or you could see if they would custom grind you a cam, I'd probably use lobe #3324 #3326
