Need advice.
Just a street car, stock spec 440
440 bored .030
KB hypereutectic pistons
Instructions say .0065 x 4.350=.028 top ring gap
Im OK with that.
For bottom ring says follow manufacturer's instructions.
None came with the Sealed Power rings.
Original Chrysler Manual says .013-.023

Whats your recommended ring gap for the second ring?

Tricks to hand file a ring square (Low budget)?

Been all over Moparts Search and net, cant get a straight answer.

I have to look up the real specs but it is about .025 to .030 on the top ring and about .018 on the second ring. But you want to follow the instructions to a T. If you did not get the specs with the rings look it up on their site. I believe I am right but not 100% sure without looking the specs up. Ron

I jumped the gun here but the .028 is right for the top ring. I set my second rings on my 440 at .018 and it has worked fine. Good luck , Ron

put your finest file in a vise & move the ring "in" toward the tang of the file with contact in that one direction only. File one end only & keep it square & deburr it when you get the gap you want. I use .003 per inch of bore (2nd ring).EDIT each time you pull the ring out butt it together & that'll let you know if you are filing it square.

FWIW I would much rather be on the too wide side than too tight on this one. End spec's with KB's for me is .0303 and I run mine at .0031/.0032.

The KB hyperuetcics need a wide top ring gap because the ring is moved closer to the piston crown (where the heat is) and the material doesnt tranfer heat very well.

Keeping the second ring gap wide is almost always a good idea on any piston. It provides an escape path for gas pressure that can build up between the top two rings. This will help keep the top ring seated on the ring land of the piston (where it needs to be to seal well).

Take a look at some second ring gap specs on modern diesel engines.

I would gap the 2nd ring at .004/inch of bore plus .004. I think that ends up around .022-023. On the filing.. by assembling yourself you're saving a bunch. I think my ring filer cost $30. IMO, it's not worth doing without the proper tools. Thye are that important to good power production.

Well, art is art, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water! And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does. Now, uh... Now you tell me what you know.
