I noticed today while tuning on my 8896 dominator (on a smallblock stroker) that i can turn the idle speed screws all the way out until they no longer touch the plate attached to the butterfly shaft, and the car will still idle at 1200 rpm. However, if i put my fingers over the idle air bleeds, the car will shut off. the idle air bleeds are 55. Does this make sense? thanks-Andy

I bet you have the transfer slots uncoverd. close the throttle blades some.

I have the throttle blades closed, well it looks like it at least. I backed the throttle blade screws all the way out and it still runs.

if everything is closed and your still running you better be looking for leaks somewhere.

check to see if the secondaries are sticking open too. some of those carbs had internal linkage probelems.
has this carb been on for awhile, or new to the combo?

The machining of the transfer slots is sometimes off.

You might still have too much exposed even though the throttle plates are completely closed.

A number of these 8896s have the trans slot peeking through even when the throttle blades are shut , if this is not the case then maybe remove some spark advance , or maybe what Quicktree says (vac leak)

If it's still running, it's getting air from somewhere. Verify that the throttle blades are actually closed. If they are, there's an air leak somewhere. I'm betting the throttle blades aren't closed, since there has to be air moving through the carb to pull fuel from the idle circuits.

If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

absolutely!!! that brings back fond memories of you, me and Gary (unlawfl) working on your Duster. we all had a great time.
i've worked on several since then too with similar problems.

I noticed on some carbs that you have to back out all the way on the idle screws and then loosen the screws that hold the butterfly's in place to allow themselves to align in the bore and close properly. You can uasually detect this by forcing them close with a little more than spring pressure. If the idle goes down, than the throttle plate"butterfly's" are binding near the closed position.

What is the ignition timing at 1200 rpm?

If it is locked out it may not idle below 1200 rpm.

Try closing idle mixture screws, (air is supplied via idle air bleed)

Or like others have stated vaccuum leak.

Thanks for the input. I'll have to check that both sets of butterflys are closing all the way. I'm willing to bet that's the problem.

The car has the timing locked out at 36*, but i don't think that's the problem being that i can't make the car NOT idle.

What is the purpose of the idle air bleeds? thanks-Andy

hey andy, had the same thing with kenny`s carbs when they came back from prc.had to tap the end of the throttle shaft where the linkage plate is welded on with a small ballpeen hammer.that was after we had them off umpteen times trying to get them to idle down

Joe, thanks for the input. I did a little test and the carb is only getting air through the primary butterflys when they appear to be closed. So,i know i don't have a leak, but the butterflies are not closed fully. I'll have to take the carb off this weekend and see what i can do to correct this. Thanks

Loosen the screws on the plates/butterfly let them
center making sure the throttle shaft closes all the
way then retighten the screws on the plates... test
to make sure they arent binding... then set the slot
so its square(transfer slot) with the idle screw,
then re install the carb then set it up for mixture
and idle
EDIT
Also make sure the bevel in in the right place(on
the plate)the number on the plate should be UP and
in front for the primaries... on the top rear for
the secondaries
