when removing accum. spring i have read to put a schim in its place, does this shim make a differance? if yes to the +, then does the shim go between valve body and valve or up inside the valve to shim it down to the valve body, thanks.

Install a steel rod, approx 1/2" dia x 3" long into the accumulator piston bore, then install the piston. (Discard spring). Double check that the valvebody will sit flush on the trans case before tightening bolts. If it does not sit flush, shorten the rod a little and recheck.

This will firm the 1-2 shift.

John

thanks john. by the way on 2nd gear band, the little steel pin in the middle of the accum. cup that the rocker rides agianst seems to be stuck in, could that be causing my 2nd gear to be slipping?

Oh no, you didn't remove the spring from the front servo, did you ? The accumulator is the center piston that the valve body covers. The lever, or "rocker" as you call it applies second gear as the pin is forced against it when oil pressure buids behind the servo when commanded by the valve body. This should always have a spring between the cover and apply piston and in some cases it will have two.

"thanks john. by the way on 2nd gear band, the little steel pin in the middle of the accum. cup that the rocker rides agianst seems to be stuck in, could that be causing my 2nd gear to be slipping?"

The steel pin you mention is the end of the front servo piston which pushes on the front band lever, which in turn applies the band around the direct drum. The pin is held in by spring pressure, and only protrudes thru the piston guide slightly. This is a normal condition. Your 2nd gear slipping may be from a loose band adjustment or simply a worn out band lining. Need to open and inspect to make sure.

John
