Attended theLODRS at Earlville and was amazed at all the guys warming up on a single jack[grass and asphalt], testing transbrakes, generating alot of wheelspeed with no jackstands. Most had stands visible in their trailers. In light of the recent tragedy and death......ah well. Alot of these racers are well known and experienced. Typical pit area, kids women dogs etc.

See it all the time

Only takes once!!!

I drive my car around the pits to warm the rear.

I'm not taking the jack out of the truck unless I need it.

But yes there are alot of guys that test the trans brakes in the lanes and pits. Didn't someone just get killed when his dragster went flying thru the pits recently

I am amazed too. I have seen people do this not far from a NHRA offical. It has to be one of the most dangerous things that can be done in the pits.

Yep, see alot at the track and elsewhere. Just fired my fleet mechanic for three write ups for this...working under the service truck with no stands.

It only takes the failure of a 10 cent seal in a jack to ruin your day...

I was under a car when the jack slipped. That was back in the 60s.Wasnt a great thig to have happen.Luckily it was a 47 Plymouth coupe and it just kind of slid backwards and had the wheels on.Still hurt a bit.First thing I tell my sons is put stands under that car.Rocky

Same here. It's actually one of the things I enjoy about going to the track. I get to cruise for a few minutes and wave to all my "fans".

A racer was doing this at our small track a few meets ago.....the tech guy happened to be cruising the pits and seen it......basically got told to mind his own business by the idiot.
So...he minded his business and banned the jerk for the rest of the season.
Some guys saw that as pretty harsh.
Sure opened up a lot of guys eyes...don't see it happening anymore.

Looks like Jamaica....never know what you'll see over there....the goats and cattle are the worst danger only second to the Jamaicans....

Yes, where the pen is sticking out is actually a bullet hole shot in my li'l Honda that I experienced while trying to get to my condo from the airport during an uprising back in 2000 when the Prime Minister tried to raise the cost of living by 25% ..... they don't take that lightly over there

I was at Sikeston Saturday night and saw two guys pull into their and bring their cars up on the brake. I wonder if the thought of a failure ever crosses their minds? It would be hard for me to sleep at night knowing my stupidity hurt someone.

Harsh? NO WAY! I applaude the track official for booting the idiot. Zero tolerance should be the policy for moves like that.

Maybe they should have banned him for life. The track officals are there for a reason.Ican see asking why they want or dont want something. But whe they tell you something its usually for a reason.Thats the problem too many moroms in the world.Had one guy at the Nats here doing a hole shot when there are hundres of people walking in the road.Offical saw him and told him thats a No No.The guy tried running some excuses.Offical told him if he saw it again he would be gone not for the weekend but for life.Rocky

Small bit of justice...at Topeka several years ago some moron was testing [warming] transbrake 10 back in staging just as someone was walking in front of his car. Guy reached in and took the moron's helmet and tossed it over the fence. Nobody retrieved it.

Here is a Projack in use at Mission Dragway last weekend (up in B.C. Canada, "A"!). This is a Pro Mod Mustang (yea I know, it's a Ford) but it went 6.87, pretty stout car and 100% built by the owner except for paint, he even makes his own CNC heads!

A well known west coast racer was just killed at Fontana a few weeks back while testing his transbrake with the car sitting on the ground. The car launched in the pits right into a trailer that had gasoline near where the dragster hit. The gasoline erupted into a ball of flames and the guy died in his car. VERY lucky that nobody else was injured.

Yes Bob..

It was Ronnie Marcum..

http://www.thevillagenews.com/story/39836/

http://drr.infopop.cc/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/75460652/m/251108861/p/1

He was a great racer and genuinely good guy who made a BIG mistake that cost him his life.
The Junior Dragsters were already up in the staging lanes, or this would have been National News. Kids most likely would have been killed if they had not been up in the lanes.

I have heard that NHRA is considering a Ronnie Marcum Rule.
It would make it mandatory to have the vehicle on jack stands when you are checking trans brake (already a rule) and when doing any type of engine work while running and no driver in the seat.
Also when checking trans break you must be strapped in with full safety equipment. This is being tossed around.

If you see anyone checking their cars trans brake or other things not on jack stands, just shut the power off..EDIT... Wait until driver is off the brake..Not WOT..

It could save their butts, or yours, or some kids.
Like I said, Ronnie Marcum only took his own life.. 10 minutes earlier it would have been such a mess.. If Kids would have been killed think of what the Government would do to Drag Racing..

Chris..

I have no experience with this but couldn't killing the power switch actually make the car launch? The drivetrain is loaded and engine is spinning, then you take power away from the entire car, including the trany brake that energy has to go somewhere.

Same thought I had when I read that.....all of a sudden there is no voltage to the TB solenoid........H-m-m-m-m.

Last weekend at our last E.T. race of the year everybody was paying attention when they heard someone on the brake in the pit area.
