I am building a 440 for a 69 GTX and I'm thinking of going with AndyF's 528 with HP manifolds formula. This will be a street car so I favor low end torque and I need good vacuum for power brakes. What can I expect from this cam? I would like a snappy street car. Any opinions welcome. My combo is as follows (mostly choosen because I have the parts):

.040 440
KB 237 (around 10.2:1)
Eddy Heads (closed chamber)
Crane 1.5 Gold Rockers
CH4B intake (air grabber hood)
HP manifolds w/ 3" head pipe/exhaust
850 Holley DP
175K MP converter
3.55 Sure grip

Thanks,

steve

More converter and headers would really help. For a simple valvetrain that doesn't require much spring it's not a bad choice.

I've got the 528 in my 67 coronet. My combo is close to yours:

thirty over 440 with flatops
Iron heads with big valves and Muscle Motors port job.
I've run the ch4b but now run street dominator
3.55
3000 stall
750 speed demon
1 7/8 headers

The cam is very snappy. Loves more initial timing. As for power brakes, they are marginal. I have a vacume can but it still doesn't cut it. It idles well at 600 rpm in gear.

The .528 has some lope to it even in a 470 inch motor so in a 440 you'll notice the idle.

It is a nice street cam with good performance up to 6500 rpm or so. I know a lot of guys think it is a small cam but it really works good with exhaust manifolds and it makes plenty of power.

In a 440 you'll want to advance it a little bit and you'll need to add some initial advance to the ignition and probably fiddle with the carb a bit to get a clean idle. The dual plane intake will help you out but you might find that even with the dual plane the 850DP won't be super friendly. Try it and see how it works but I wouldn't be surprised if a Edelbrock 800 cfm wouldn't work a lot nicer on the street than an old school 850DP.

I shortned the advance slots on my distibutor and added more initial and it made a BIG difference with the 528. It does idle well and has great power.

What would you compare this cam to in a hydraulic flat tappet? I am worried about it being to much for my power brakes and the sweetspot seems a little higher than the cams I have been looking at (2400 rpm as opposed to 16/1800). I really want to run the HP manifolds and its hard to ignore the articles Andy has written in regard to the MP 528.

I do have a Stock 440 Carter AVS I could rebuild. Would that be a better choice.

I'm running one in my SB, 11pnds vacuum in gear at 750 rpm, 21 initial 38 total, pulls good up to 6800 with a weiand excelerator single plane intake.

I've ran the 528 in a couple of 440's now and they idled dead smooth and ran power brakes like a stocker. I expected it to have some lope and low vacuum but that was not the case for me. Tell your aunt Bessie you have a stock 318 under the hood and she won't be able to tell unless she slaps the throttle.

I have the 528 in my 470 (that AndyF built the shortblock). Have port Edelbrock heads, headers, an Edelbrock dual-plane, just installed a Demon 850 DP. Have 16 or 18 degrees of intital. The thing starts on the first revolution every time. Idles with some lope. I'mable to granny drive around the neighborhood all day. And mashing the pedal to the floor cause a lot of smoke behind the car for some reason

GREAT cam. Intially I had a slightly larger mechanical and a single plane. UGH. Hated it. No bottom end. Loaded up when I would granny drive it. Didn't turn on till 2000 rpm.

PS I have manual brakes but get solid vacuum in the low teens which should be good enough for power brakes.

PPS When I get time I'm gonna pull the TTI headers off and install manifolds.

I ran it in a $300 440 I threw together for my truck a few years ago. It was a torque monster, it was picking the front wheels 6-8" on launch. Dave

you beeter check hood clearance real close wit hthat manifold , it's taller than stock a little and at least one board member dented his hood on some bad advice that it would clear ... from me because I ASSuMEd it was the same height as stock ...

Dave you must have donw something right, Larry put one in his mid 12 second 440 wagon along with KB pistons in place of his 509 and went backwards. Had much better manners and streetability but the 509 was much more cam for the strip for him. It is actually a lessor cam than the 509 after you take the lash off the .528 you end up in the .500 area.

John, would you happen to know what carb your friend used when it hit the hood? I wonder if a Holley as opposed to a Carter/Eddlebrock would make a difference.

3" pipe w/ manis is over kill, but you can always go w/ headers later. I'm running the 528 w/ this set-up...440-6 about 11:1 seems to be nice and responsive, altough I'm still in the tuning stages. 727 2800 stall (about a 175k) and 3.91. Ported closed chamber heads, 1.5 rollers, headers and 3" all the way back. I set the lash at .024-.028 instead of the .028-.032 as the cam card states...might even try .020-.024

only difference is down track as in the holley is WAY better...lol CH4B should fit under the hood no problems even w/ a holley. I ran one on my 67 coronet w/ a 1/2 4 hole spacer and no problems.

Don; I remember you telling me about Larry's 528 experience. I was running 11.26-1 with the 528, that might have made the difference. My cranking compression was 205 psi. Other than that everything was the same, it was hooking so hard the body twisted enough to pop my drivers door open on launch. Dave

I also got 11" Hg vacuum on my 340, but I didn't put that much initial advance (10), but spent a lot of time getting the TQ to work. It clatters like an old slant six with the wide .028"/.032" lash. I tightened it up a little and made the vacuum worse. I just had a TQ and intake and 340 manifolds. I never took it much past 6000 though. I measured it at 245 degrees at .050". I probably should have left the compression at 10.5 with that cam. Even at 9:1, it still pumped 150psi on a compression check.

I can tell you this. My friend had a 440 in his 65 Ply with the .528 cam and I had a 383 with the .484 cam. He always complained that the .484 in my 383 had more lope then the .528 in his 440 and it did. But the .528 is a great cam to use with exh manifolds. Andy F has proved that on the dyno with some of the engines he has built. Yes it does not have alot of lope but who cares if it runs great.

Now I run the .557 cam in my 63 and I have power brakes. And the power brakes work fine for me as they stop with nornal pedal effort and have never gave me a hard pedal. So you should be fine running power brakes with the .528 cam. Good luck , Ron

I ran the .528 MP in a 440 powered '71 'Cuda with 3.23 gears and a 2500 stall.

Great street manners and reasonably fast at the track too!

It did tractionless 13.5's @ 104 with a stock cast iron intake and 750 Holley on top. 9.5:1 CR.

The cam and Holley were really the only mods to the engine.

I drove it at the track like I drove it on the street. Same crappy radials.
