Is the 470 stroker(chevy rod journals)good. Im not keen on strokers and woder what this intales. I have a 400 block and can get a 470 crank with chevy journals. What else do I need. It will end up in a truck. Thanks to who reply

Rods, pistons to match the stroke, rod length and deck hieght with the compression ratio you want, don't forget the combustion chamber size and head gasket bore and thickness when ordering the pistons. You also will need rod bearings, rings and wrist pins, keepers if you want full floating pistons, rods and pins, balance the rotating assembly with either a nuetral balance balancer and flex plate or a external balancer and flex or converter

Your making a stroker anyway, so why not just get a 500ci kit, put the foot to the floor & enjoy.
I have one & from now on am only keeping spare blocks & chuck all the internals for stroker stuff.
The torque is awesome & as a bonus, the fuel consumption is way down compared to the same cam,intake,carb,heads & headers all transfered over.
I'm talking 30% less fuel used.

I`m going on 9 years w/my 3.900 stroked off-set groung 413 crank,6.385 chevy rods,and (now) home ported rpm heads and a solid roller cam. I drive it all over the high desert on 91 pump junk and it has NEVER left me on the side of the road or embarrased at the track.

Whats the total cost for the 470 stroker? You
will have to add it all up. More money spent on
buying extra parts seperately. It will make big
TQ for a truck.

The 400 with the 440source 511 CI kit will make more TQ than the 470 inch and I would bet, cost
less money. Streetable? You bet, all the pulling power you need with out reving it over 5000 rpm.

Any more info on your build?

If you're getting a good deal on the crank then the 470 might be the way to go.

I like mine but be aware they like to rev so if you're looking for low revving big torque or if you're not getting a good deal on the crank I'd go bigger.

I plan to go to 511 myself next build, size matters, ask any woman

I can get a 451 crank for $100 or 470 for $75. All I have is a 400 block with caps. I have a Tunnel ram that I can use also. I also have a set of 915 heads that will need redone

My , the 470 combo is a better bang for the buck overall compared to the 4.15 crank 493-496; With the right compression, head and cam combo it can make near equal power so long as you have the valvetrain to carry the additional 400-500 rpm. For lighter A bodies the 470 9or even the 451) can even be an advantage in terms of tractible power to the ground in the more tire limited nose heavy combo. Theres NOTHING wrong with a 493 at all, it's just for my $$$ I'd build the 470 or.....

For a heavier B or E body car with mid 3 to low 4 gears where you really want the highest average streetable torque over the widest powerband possible the 4.25" crank 511 is the best overall motor to build.....in all practical terms you really can't throw too much head at these monsters.

Itll go in a truck and Ill probably run 4:10s So I can Drive it to Work on occasion. I live 25 miles from work, Interstate for the most part and It might get driven to the track witch is another 20-30 miles

I like the 511 like Streetwize said, however for $75 if that crank is good and you already have a block.....................

for a Truck I'd build a ported 10:1 pump gas E-head 511 with either the RPM, a street dominator or the indy dual plane, a 950 HP, 4.10 gears, a Comp 251/257 @.050 Hydraulic and a tight 9 1/2" 3200 stall/4000 flash converter. it'll drive around town with all the manners of a sharp tuned but mildly warmed over 440...but it'll feel like that same motor with an unlimeted supply of 175 shot every time you nail it.

But since you have the crank and rods (and if they're good to go) I'd use the same basic combo in a 470 and just knock the cam down to the 241/247XE, in that state it'll be down maybe about 50hp/60lb/ft to the 511 but at ardound 550 or so crank HP it will be a VERY STOUT trouble free daily driver.

This is a basic "best bang for the buck, moderate RPM" combo, perfect for a mid 3 geared B/E or 4.10 geared truck. you want about 280-300cfm @.28" heads and look to get about 265 @.400 for it to really shove you in the back. The mid lifts are where it's at on the street....remember your cam spends a good bit of it's useable duration between that 1/3 and 2/3 open window....and in a non roller type app you're not hanging the valve open over the nose so the peak lift flow just isn't as critical.

A 511 is about 10% (close to another cylinder's worth) larger so the end results will be roughly proportional, 470's with big solids and GOOD valvetrain can spin high enough to make 700hp and more easy when they have enough head, compression and cam.

Run a BIG radiator and an aux cooler on the tranny and you're all set.

I only have the block. I have never built a engine yet but plan to in the near future. My buddy will assist me in the process so no F$%k ups. I have a 383 that he owned. He bought the shortblock and its est at 510hp. He ran it in a 76 Fury with 4:10s and was in the low 12s IIRC with a single carb. He than went tunnelram and duels. Its going to be in another truck with 4:30s and a full spool.

I ran a 471 CID (3.915" stroke) for a few years and it was a good motor. Then I moved up to 4.250" and 511 CID. The Manley rod I used is no longer made, but the 6.700" rod should be around. See the attached table.
