All things being equal a 4 speed will beat an automatic every time.

4spd is always FASTER. ET's could go either way.

Ask Charlie Westcott [ War fish ] Now they want to penalize him because he's running a stick.

it's ok to butt heads, just don't do it with a butthead

It depends on the car and driver If you could make all things equal the stick trans and clutch has less parasitic drag and torque converter slippage so it will be faster and quicker due to those reasons, at least on paper Your results may vary

Don't get confused on auto vs stick at the track. People run the autos, because they are CONSISTENT and easier to hook up and easier to shift. Makes for great bracket racing.

Doesn't mean they are FASTER or Quicker......just easier.

I'd bet on the 904 over 95% of "833" racers.

You can't duplicate the torque multiplication of an automatic torque converter with a stick. They are almost always quicker but less efficient.

The trick setup would be an automatic that locks up the converter after the launch. You get the best of both worlds. I dont know any mopar guys doing it. I think a lockup 904 wouldnt survive with much more torque than a stock motor at WOT.

There are some GM guys with this setup.

Not a perfect comparison, but look at SS/AH class. There you have 727 cases with 904 guts and every trick rollerbearing known to man. Very very efficent converters and transmissions. You also have 4spd stick cars there. I'm not sure what stick they are, but they are still a stick.

The stick cars are a little lighter weight, so it's not a perfect comparison at all.

Stick cars out MPH the 904's, and they are at about the same ET....right now.

Doesn't mean you are quicker or bang the gears any better. Just had a better package.

Back 'in the day' the 4 gear cars were quicker but do to improvements in transmission parts and converters available that no longer is as true as it once was. Also there aren't that many good 4 speed drivers left. Used to see a lot of 4 speed drivers that could bang a gear keeping the right foot on the floor (I could even do it (no more)) but not so many any more.

I meant in the same package.

All's I'm saying is; most 833 guys can't nail their shifts with any kind of consistancy.

You might be in that other 5% though.

edit: I also see you don't run the 833 anymore.

Now I will confuse everyone with this, In the mud I have never seen anyone shift fast enough to keep up with a auto trans, most manual shift trucks fall flat on the shift, the resistance in the mud is grater than pavement and instantly slows down the drive line dropping rpm too much on clutch release, this factor must come to play in drag racing to some extent Just something to kick around

4 speed for me, and for alot of years. But a 4 speed will probably cost twice as much starting from scratch than an auto. It all depends on what you want. If you want something only 5% can shift and have that ego push, excellent. Otherwise get what everyone can drive and stay with the auto.
