I see most small block class racers run a 360 w/ a 904 and a low gear set.Are there any class racers w/ a 340 / 727 and if so what kind of times are you getting out of your combos?

Everyone I know runs a 904.Would not even think about a 727 in a small block class car.

There are a lot of 340's in Stock. 360's are most popular in IHRA Stock because Mopar never made a 340 crate engine. 340's tend to be in lighter cars but run as fast or faster than similar 360 combos. The '71 340's are usually the fastest because of the high compression and big TQ. '74 360's are good but the cars just started getting heavier. 340 6-pack Challenger was a good combo until it got factored to a higher HP rating. Elephuntman had the C/SA record with a T/A in the 10.30 range a year or two ago!

Using a 727 is a waste of time, $ and HP in class cars because a 904 is legal and faster by at least a tenth.

Most well set up 904 are even faster than .1 that the 727 prepared the same with equalivent parts

So what kind of dough does it take to build a durable 904 that will live behind 5-600HP? What mods are suggested?

An all out Pro trans will be 5 grand or better. That is the latest trick of the week model. A stock 904 done right will handle quite a charge. I would not be too worried with 500 or a little more.
