Last week broke my front u-joint/ front yoke. My trans was built by T.S.I out of Chicago, had no problems with it at all. Now in Wa. state I was trying to find someone locally and did. He wanted some info on my trans, So I called the trans shop and found out that it had 5.0 hemi lever, Alto bands/clutches, 5 disc clutch, and the sprag was not a bolt in but factory press in. My question is the builder now says if it is tight and not damaged to leave it alone, what do you guys think about that? How hard would it be for me to take apart the trans and inspect the sprag? I have the band adjustment spec (72inch pounds back out 13/4 turns is what they use)any other things to look for or watch out for. Thanks Matt
I believe the rule of thumb is if you have had a drive line failure behind the transmission the sprag should be checked especially a stock one. If you have had a 727 explode at your feet as I have and many others you will take the time to check it.

For any driveline failure, I would have the sprag inspected for signs of rollover. A bolt-in sprag does nothing to prevent rolling over the springs and spring tabs, but only to stop the outer race from spinning in the case if the factory spline/stakes fail also. You will have to take almost everything out of the transmission case to see the sprage and inspect it. You can leave the extension housing and shaft in.
Although not a bad idea to use a bolt-in sprag, if the springs, rollers and races are in good shape, and the outer cam is tight in the case, I wouldn't change it.
I don't like the 5.0 front band lever in a race 727 with a aftermarket valve body (higher than stock line pressure). I prefer a 4.2 or 3.8. But if you are happy with how it shifts, it may be fine.

trans brake or not if the pressed in one is in good shape and still tight in the case no reason for a bolt in sprag they where meant to repair a bad case the are no stronger that a factory unit in good shape unless you go to a super sprag with 16 rollers insteed of the factory 12.
70 duster full chassis super pro 416 CNC Indybrock heads 727 w/brake
best so far 1.212 60 6.219 in 1/8 at 110.88 9.768 at 137.81 1/4
