I wouldnt discredit a dana because of weight.
I swapped my broken 8.75 out for a dana and saw nothing ET wise by doing the swap, in spite of gaining about 35-40 pounds, and having added b body drum brakes on to the equation at the same time( a body 8.75 and smaller a body drums were what car had).. Must be the dana is effecient, and the weight is in a place it doesnt hurt.

Check out the June '08 issue of Car Craft. They did a 9" vs 12bolt vs dana 60 shoot out. For the street, it kinda comes down to: when do you need a 9.75" ring gear? Or a super strong 9"? Then again, if your racing, bigger is better. The good ole 8 3/4 can handle a ton of power. Why not stick with the lighter (faster) set up? Oh yeah, a BIG, FAT to Car Craft for throwing the ford 8.8 in that article and leaving out the 8 3/4!

well stick around a while and you will see a few dozen good ole 8 3/4s bite the dust. on a street car they will last forever. throw a real set of slicks, a little weight, and decent hp anf they are gone.

the ring and pinion will always be the weak point no matter what you name it or how it's built. if I were going to use an 83/4 it would be an aluminum case.

I personally have never broke a 9"..I don't have enough power.. But I was in Denver for a race and wanted to try a 5.29 gear.. There were several guys that had spares for me to just pop in.. That was my personal experience. Now I have 2 sets of third members.. 1 for altitude.. Chris..

Hi, thanks for all the ideas. dr diff thanks. anyone from down here knows how pricey any choice is to be made up. have borrowed a 4.1 8 3/4 for next weekend .if the car likes it through the trap it wll be a dana. if not a 9 inch. bearing in mind i have only been running a 3.91 rear gear. and yes it easier to obtain the 9 inch stuff BUT the dana is cooler we'll see thanks again Tex
