Looks like im going to pull the tranny out of my wagon and have someone rebuild it. There are several people in town that can do this job "on the side" if I bring the tranny to them. All im looking for them to do is a bone stock rebuild,no speed parts or shift kit.Whats an acceptable price to have someone do it,and at what price should I consider it to be too much?

So far I have 2 people in mind.

The first guy says if I bring it to him hell charge $575,with stock converter with a 12 month unlimited mileage warranty.Says it might take him 3 evenings,as he stocks all the parts to do the job.

I havent had the chance to talk to the other guy,but from what I have been told,is hes the subject matter expert when it comes to Transmissions at the local Chrysler dealership, has been doing transmissions for at least 25 years and from what an ex coworker says, this guy can do tranny rebuilds in his sleep.I plan on talking to the guy tomorrow as today was his day off.

Stock rebuilds on a three speed automatic are $500 - $550ish here.

This is why it makes little sense to ask this type of question on a WORLDWIDE internet forum , prices vary by area , the parts pretty much cost the same everywhere in the US , but labor rates vary .

It's fairly cheap for a rebuild kit for a 727 , what you are paying for is a WARRANTY , general practice is cost of parts times 2.5 plus the cost of labor which usually comes from a book and is more time than an experienced person can do the job in. This covers the shop incase they have to redo it , they still make money on the parts .

Are you going to ship or drive your trans 1000 miles to save a couple hundred bucks ? Are you going to print this out and tell the guy he's charging too much and you can get it done elsewhere for less ???

I dropped mine off with a Mancini race rebuild kit and it cost me $300 for labor. Everything was tank cleaned and it looked like a new one with its fresh paint when I picked it up. I've never done one myself but I could easily see 4-5 hours for what I got so the $300 seemed more than fair. $5-600 complete with warranty seems decent at least for my part of the world where door rates are $75-$100/hr.

I know that back in the mid to late 90's ,I had a SB 727 rebuilt by a well known guy in town. Ill admit he didnt seem like he was all there, but it only took him 2 nights, and I had it back. I did the R&R,with Converter and shift kit that I supplied,it only cost me $250.

Lots of old timers in town remember the guy,but he hasnt been seen around in a long time and im afraid the $250 rebuild days are long gone too.

Yup. $400 and up depending on the need from me.

Well, art is art, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water! And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does. Now, uh... Now you tell me what you know.

Ive been told its not a hard tranny to rebuild, someone told me something about some O rings or something, that are tapered and if not installed correctly, the tranny will not provide movent. Anyone heard of this?

Im getting bits and pieces of info from everyone.

They aren't o rings they are rubber seals and they are designed to work in one direction so if you were to install it backward there would be the potential for a problem .

If you have not at least torn down a few and are comfortable with what you are doing, I would let someone else do it. I have repaired quite a few that just had the wrong year parts mis-matched. It is incredible how wrong a torqueflite can be and still work!

This is a point worth mentioning, I've pulled apart recently rebuilt units that were built by store-front shops that were so screwed up it's a wonder they even moved.

Ask around your area for somebody that specializes in Torqueflites, even if he's working out of his garage, rather than a pro shop that builds Fords before lunch and Toyotas after lunch.

Thats a big blanket statement there I work on every thing from Ford's to Toyota's to Mercedes and if you talk to some of the people I have done work for will find out I do a nice job on Torque Flites also so you really just need some one that knows what there doing. I will agree its better to find an older person that's been in the buisness long enough to know what a Torque Flite is.

and going rate will be a broad area lots of variables as far as hourly rates ect. Last 727 we did was a ramcharger 4x4 we did the complete job R&R plus build trans had bad pump bad front drum and a bad planet plus all the normal parts complete with all hard parts and converter plus a ujoint and transfer case input seal was 1600.00 and that was lower than any of there other estimates.
