i posted this in this secton because i need the opinion of guys that tow their cars to the track
just found a 04 crewcab longbed 2500 pu..
with the auto and hemi..
its got 200,000 miles on it.
looks factory under the hood and runs fine
no smoke on start up..
havent driven it yet.. though
what kind of problems do you think ill run into with a hemi auto with this kind of milage?

they want 6k for it..but it needs tires. and has a slight smurf to the front bumper (it needs a frnt bumper)
i prefer I6. but if its cheap enough ill take the hemi.
give your opinions.on what will break down on this truck ...if i tow with it..?
cheapst

What kind of trailer do you intend to pull?

I pull an open trailer all over with a Dakota R/T.

As long as you have a good brake controller and brakes I'd think you'd be fine pulling anything not too huge.

I bought a 2004 Hemi, 4 door 2500 new, drove it to 40,000 miles and then sold it to a friend, he has just rolled up 100,000 miles on it

Nothing has been swapped out, all still original , yes,, even the tires ( they really need to be replaced, he is waiting till fall )

I pulled open trailer all over and he has pulled his 5th wheel camper all over

Its not bad with no headwind, but if there is ..its horrible with his camper

It pulled open trailer all over, no problem

Just truck by itself will knock down 18-20 driving normal

No headwind and flat, its not bad with a open trailer 12-13 or so

Enclosed, headwind was horrible .. maybe 7 mpg

Yeah, I WON A few bets on the fuel milage on my truck, it is (was) a 2wd 2500

If you drive nuts, it will really go down fast but, drive normal ..20 mpg on the highway is normal

Now that I think of it I have gotten 14 mpg with 2 Hemis in the back and a drum of fuel on the way to a dyno session.

The 5.7 will pull anything....the problem is to ensure you have enough truck to stop whatever you decide to pull.

In the case of the 1500 the engine has way more grunt than the chassis was meant to stop or keep straight at 60 mph

as stated before, what kind of trailer, how big, weight loaded,, I also would ask how much are you going to use it to tow and how much distance will you tow with it.
I tow with a 1992 Ford F350 dually with a 460 fi gas engine, it now has 203000 mile's on it and is in good mechanical shape, she's no powerhouse but it does what I bought it for, but I don't tow all the time, just the Classic Event's and to the local tracks a few time's a year, National Trail's, Norwalk and Pacemakers.

I think Hemi's are great for towing open trailers. I just towed a 1946 Power Wagon 600 miles on a 10,000 lb equipment trailer with a Hemi Durango. The Durango had 106k on the clock. Loaded trailer weight around 8600-8800 lbs. It got 13 MPG and change at 62 MPH with a headwind. Before I got into the headwind it was 14 and change.

Several folks have been dissapointed with performance on enclosed trailers in a headwind.

With 200k on the clock though I don't know. Even if the engine is fine what about the transmission? There are a lot of big ticket "if's" with that many miles.

Ive had an '05, ''07, and now an '09 ALL with a HEMI and NONE got 18-20. The two 4x4's got around 13 and the new '09 two wheel drive gets around 15.4 UNHOOKED. They all pulled awesome by the way. We have a Cummins 4x4 older model. The HEMI is just as strong. The new Cummins will kill it though.

My 04 1500 QC 4wh dr with the Hemi will get 19-20 on the highway and around 13 city. I pull my 28ft enclosed trailer loaded and would get anywhere from 9-11mpg.

It will be fine, Its got 200K on it so it obviousley has gotten by the horrid valve spring issue on the earlie 2003-2004 hemis. I have replaced dozzens of sets, the suplier, comp, had a bad spann of them and we got a few under warrenty, but most made it to 45k+

They are a good truck, and pull ok.
still not a cummins, but they are 5-8k cheaper...

Kasey

Great truck but it seems like a lot of $$$ for a truck with so many miles.I would shop around a bit first.

You can probally find a 2500 Cummins deisel for that price if you look in Texas on Craigs list the 2003 High outputs seem to be the best on power and fuel economy

You haven't said what you are towing, is it an open trailer, or heavier?

sorry guys...has football practice last night..

ill be towing a 22ft enclosed with the duster
and a 16ft open..most of the time..
the trailer weight and all gear is prolly 8k?
i feel fairly confident the truck will tow it when it was new..
i was most concerned about this truck with 200k
do these trannies hold up this long?
seem's like first impression the motor will hold up with this milage..
same for the diff?
i currently tow with a GMC 2wd xcab lwb..with the 5.o and 5spd manual. makes about 150hp?
although its in great shape and runs excellent
it gets 13mpg with out the trailer..
and 8 with the trailer..
but i tow 3days a week. (work requires the flatbed trailer with lumber on it)
so if the dodge has more power and the same milage its a still a positive for me...fwiw

agian i am most concerned with what will likely break or give me problems...with this trucks age?
cheapst

I would be inclined to look for a one ton with lower mileage, based on your weight and usage. You say you will be towing three times a week for work, might as well get something that is likely to be more reliable.
On towing capacity, after having had a wreck because I had too light a tow vehicle, I am convinced I want something that won't get tossed around by what I am towing when I have to hit the brakes in an emergency. My motorhome is 15,000 lbs, trailer is 9,000 loaded. Works great.

05 Hemi 2wd 1500 QC = 13-15 City, 17-20 Hwy

Towing 24' enclosed w/Duster = 6-13 depending on grades. Oh yeah it now has 140,000 mi on it.

The lumber I haul is light weight . Mostly remodel type materials
So valvesprings is all I need to worry about?
