My buddy that I am going on the Hot Rod Drag Week
had a issue the other day on his fuel pressure, he
has the gauge under the hood(Summit unit) and the
first thing I asked him was " is it a liquid filled
gauge", he said it was... so I told him to drain it
and put a vent hole in it or get a new non filled
gauge.... he looked at me like I'm some sort of
idiot(probably am).... he said that he paid more
for the "good gauge" and got that filled one. So
after telling him that the filled gauges do have a
place to be used in a controlled environment with
nice stable temps.... he still didnt buy what I
was saying.... so he did a little test... after
having the engine running for a while he seen the
pressure drop to about 1#... then put a cold rag
around the gauge.... boom... pressure goes right
back up to 6 1/2... he did that 3 times.... now he's
a believer... but still pissed he paid more for that
filled gauge over the cheapo.... LOL

I went down that same road. I about panicked when I looked and it was at 45psi when it was supposed to be at 58psi!

That is funny and one would wonder why they keep making those gauges when its common knowledge they dont work .

you can pull the little rubber grommet to relieve the pressure in the guage and it will read normal again for a while. i have seen guys blowing fuel past their needle and seats and straight out the boosters because of those guages

Since I'm one of the dummies with one of these things , what's the solution or alternative? I'd be happy to buy a better gauge if someone knows where one can be had.

They either have a rubber plug to fill them at or
the GOOD ones have a screw in fitting with a breather
(but those HAVE to be mounted in one direction with
the vent at the top)... pull the plug and drain the
glycerin(liquid) then drill a small hole in the rubber
plug so the gauge can vent(pressure needs to be the
same inside the gauge as outside the gauge) then
put the plug back in ... good to go

isnt the glycerin there to keep the gauge from being temp sensitive?

No, its there to dampen the gauge movement to keep the needle steady during times of high vibration.

Working the ProMax Carbs booth at several of the Mopar events, I have learned when someone comes up on a hot sunny day asking for a fuel pressure regulator, to always ask what kind of gauge he's running!

I went through that too had it running with 0 pressure pulled the line off fired the pump and flooded a big patch of floor! Dam. went through the popping the little plug to equalize the pressure finaly got a non filled gauge! no more problems. my local speed shop will not even sell the liquid ones any more!

Thanks Mike, I'll give that a try.

I am highly experienced with this- Ill show you my Visa Bill ..

I started with a standard gage at the regulator under the car

Then , to verify i had fuel problems i ducttaped a gage to my widshield directly teed/piped to the fuel line - This worked the best

Then I bought a Nordskopf gage from Promax .. crappy customer service from the manufacturer, 200 bucks down the drain .. sending unit is bad .. they wont send me another ..

Then I tried an isolation style from autometer .. its like juggling
dogs trying not to spill the antifreeze / mixture ..

I got the isolated gage to work halfway decently with some luck but Id say try an electric autometer gage .. its worth it .

The thing with the isolated gauge is you have to have
all the air out of the glycerin side(air compresses)
mine works great

I run a liquid filled 0-20 psi Murphy gauge , pulled the brass pin outa the top and let her rip, no problems in 5 years,

After I got the gage together I mityvacced the gage and somehow managed to refil it , what a mess over the fenders .. But it works plus - 1 #

At least it lets me know if I dip below 5

after the Nodskopf experience , I trust the isolated gage a little more .. still leery of the electriocs , but I have both ..

Your letting it breathe to the atmosphere so its
not canceling the line pressure

I thought you had to vent a liquid gauge? we sell racor vac/press gauges that have the brass pin in top also, there is a plastic tape with writing on it that says, remove pin to read gauge, I got tired of removing the pin so I just chucked it on the murphy gauge, just gota install it with the hole facing up, I think the non vented liquid filled gauges are not for use in under hood installs cause of high temps, the gauges I use are not for racing or auto but seem to work fine but are a little pricey

I was just putting an autometer isolator style deal in my car and noticed in the instructions it quite clearly states the liquid guages will go up or down 1lb fo a 30 degree change either way.
