Have a bud that wants to build a dana 60 for an e-body, but wants it to look correct. Wondering if he can modify a truck housing and add some stuff or is he going to have to buy an original one. He's building a F.A.S.T. style car and want aot of the stock looking parts. Figured if I can get him pics on that a stock housing looks like, he might be able to save some cash by building his own.

Just better off buying one from Strange, or DTS, instead of playing with truck units, or used

Why not save 60 lbs of unsprung weight and fun a 8 3/4? You aren't gonna bust one up with poly tires.Just puttin it out there.

because it's a 4spd and 440-6, and 600hp on a 3500+loaded car dosen't mean much of a survival rate.

He's trying to make it look more original, and has been told those aftermarket housing don't llok original. The older truck housing look more correct since they were made around the same time, so he figured it would be easier and cheaper to go that route. Plus he could have it modified so it would look stock, and have his little cheats hidden away.

It is going to be difficult to add the pinion snubber mounts to a truck axle housing.

The housings from the aftermarket using the S-60 housings don't look correct because they are TRUCK HOUSINGS,.......the S-60 aftermarkets housings were "affordable" Dana units for people wanting dana's,.....you can specify anything you want, DTS are perhaps the best units out there, IMHO,.....you can spend as little as $1750-$3000 depending on what you want, for about $2K you can have a factory looking Dana 60, up to 4:10 for that price, pinion snubber, axle perches attached, painted, ready for install,.....extras are brakes/disks/powder coating, etc, etc

I bought one from Dr. Diff and it was a bolt in ready to go for my 71 Hemi Cuda Rag Clone. Shipped right to my door. Brakes were done as well.

Reid,....if you don't mind me asking, what was the $$ outlay for Dr Diff's?,...was it a Strange Dana60,....pinion snubber as original, and what gear?....and brakes?

Thanks
Mike

Cass will probably remember better than me.
I bought his demo unit if I remember right. Converted truck Dana. He machines the axles tubes to replicate the car dana 60's. It was right on the money.
11" factory brakes installed with lines and clips where they should be. He also installs them with a disk set-up but I went with a complete stock set-up. My only deviation was 3.54 gears instead of 4.10's. It even had the green plug installed. I have pics at home I will upload tonight. All I did was add the paper tag and painted on the numbers and inspection marks and was ready to go.
There was something about the axle spline that was different and he said he could change it if I wanted but I was not concerned. (Guessing 31 to 35 or something similar to that.)

$2200 for complete assembly I believe. $120 to ship to Maine on a crate. This was two years ago so I may be off a little but pretty sure that was the price.

Thanks for the kind words.

I used to fabricate pretty convincing passenger car Dana 60 rears from truck housings on a regular basis. I don't know if I can do it any more, because of my current workload.
