Recently acquired a 1967/68 383 block & heads, and what's supposed to be a 727 tranny.

Here's what I've determined so far:
Bloc casting number 2468130 9 - 59-71 383 B block. Below the casting number is "LL". I'm stumped here.
Date cast into the block is 12-6-67
Deck plate stamps: D383 (says it's a 1968 383ci); 12162 - this does mean the 2nd block assembled on 12/16, correct? Yes, I realize that casting dates and assembly dates are not the same.
Head casting numbers: 2843906-1 and 2843906-6. What do the -1 and -6 mean? I do know these are 383/440 '906' heads, 1968-1970. Also on a tag near the casting numbers: 01608 (on the -1 head) and 0160B (on the -6 head). They might both be 8, or B, but one looked definitely rounded and the other definitely flat on the left side of the letter/number.
I haven't gotten the engine torn down any further yet, acquired as a block & heads, so I don't know for sure whether it's a steel or cast crank. I was told steel...
On the underside of the engine, near where the starter mounts, I found this number: PT383P23321129. I expected to find a VIN there, but I can't figure this one out. Is it possible that this is a marine/industrial motor? If anyone can decode this for me, well...

I'm not very good with transmission identification. Can someone tell me where to even look for casting/identification numbers? The only numbers I see are "103-5" on the bellhousing, in two places, and it appears to be cast vs stamped. I can't pick it up to check pan shape - with my parts store background, that's my first option for id'ing a tranny - and I wasn't watching when they loaded it in the truck.

If you need more information, I'll call hubby from work tonight and ask him to please look. (Yes, the 350s are his, but he drives a Ram)

Also picked up the differential gears for an 8 3/4" rear end, I'm guessing 3.23 gears (fine for me, will be driving the car to/from work some, and it's a long drive). Axles/differentials/etc are hubby's ball of wax, so I'm letting him worry with that part

Year One Mopar Engine Casting Numbers

There was a really great Chrysler Transmission ID Numbers list, but that website has since been tagged as an "Internet Attack" webpage:

There are these links that may be helpful:

Thanks! The transmission site came up without a problem. I'll definitely check the others here shortly.

The last 2 means it was assembled on the 2nd (day) shift on December 16, 1967

The dash numbers following the basic casting numbers refer to the casting core used to make the sand molds the heads are cast in. Same for block dash numbers.

Those are the casting dates.

PT= Plant Trenton
383= Displacement
P= Premium fuel needed
2332= Build date December 16, 1967
1129= 1129th unit built that day

The '68 partial VIN is often stamped in the top of the block where the bellhousing mates to the block.

The transmission part number and build date are stamped in the drivers side pan rail.

I found this number: PT383P23321129

PT = Trenton Plant
383 = cubic inch
P = Premium Fuel
2332 = Assembled on Sat, 16 Dec 1967
1129 = number of that assembly

IF there is a VIN stamp (hit & miss on '68s) it will be on the top rear of the block near the oil sending unit where the trans/bellhousing attaches.

Frank

EDIT
Boy, Does that John type fast.
More info than I had

Thanks guys! You are a huge help, and a veritable treasure trove of Mopar lore...

Now I have to call & roust hubby from the video game to get me a tranny casting number and look for a VIN on the block. I looked several times, but maybe he will see something I didn't. Work is getting in the way of my Mopar...

Mymopar.com was infected last month for a grand total of 4 hours with a malware that was accidently attached to a file by a memeber of the forum. The item was removed and the entire site was scanned with no other viruses or malware found. The problem is that this was picked up by google which is what Mozilla (Firefox) relies upon when warning users about potental harmful sites. Google has been contacted several time to get the site removed from this list, but it is virtually impossible to get someone to listen to you these days at these monster online companies.

I hope this helps to clear up any apprehension anyone may have in visiting the site.
