As I mingle amongst the small block community, I am constantly learning something new which also raises more questions. One question that pops into my head once in a while that I always forget to ask about in conversation is about the P5 heads. I understand they succeeded the W8's for the PS trucks. After that did Mopar just kill that engine program altogether? Curious as to why. Looks like a pretty mean top end. I know if one car that has one on an 4 cyl. in NHRA, and I guess maybe some dirt/circle 4 cyl. motors still run them, but not exactly sure. I see the P7's for sale quite frequently, but never the P5's on any drag cars, or for sale.

From what I understand Mopar stopped casting them for a while, and they were only run on a specific R4 which Mopar stopped running. There are racers out there using them in Comp and Super Stock, including Pro Stock here in Australia. As the supply of these heads has become an issue, I know that the Australian Pro Stock team has had to resort to having the heads cast here in Australia. The R4 blocks are still an issue, sadly producing an engine block is a time consuming and costly exercise, so in reality the demand is not there to produce enough R4 style blocks and recover your money. Who knows?
Probably because, NHRA axed the Pro Stock Truck class.
I loved that class. It was and still is my all time favorite!!!

Tom Mettler still runs a PST in Comp Eliminator, he won at Seattle not too long ago. That looks like his car in the pic Vic? AL....

Indeed they are wicked! What's the limitation on the R4 with cubic inches, the bore, cam height location, or something else? It's ok with me though, I love the sound of a 358" motor hitting the high notes down the track. I guess the R4 the only block these heads will bolt to as LA360 mentioned. I am with you HEMIDARTS, I loved those PST's, it was different and fun. I saw somewhere that Aldermnan's old truck (or one of them) now has a Diesel motor.

I have more pictures of the P5 in Mettler's Dakota on home computer, but I am working out of town.
the pic above was taken at Mopars at the strip... they ran quick 16...
they have quite the maintenance routine between rounds...

I think from memory the guy running one down here runs it at 399 cubes. The stroke is in the 3.6" range with the bores maxed out at around 4.22"-4.25"
They are very trick, one day I'll own a pair, lol AL....

So what do they flow??? How big of an intake valve is in them???
Good question. As I learn a little more about cylinder heads, I would be curious to see what the runner looks like, the P7's look to be about 2-3 feet long!
P5- 10° intake, 2° exhaust valve angles, and use a 5/16" stem based on the literature I found.
I had read or heard somewhere that they were trying to run a Hemi head when they were getting back in NASCAR, and NASCAR not only said NO but H*** NO! Perhaps that is how the P7 was developed? I know there are some on this board that know alot more about it than me.
This is the only stock photo I could find of the P5's.
"Starting" with a 8.600" deck height, the rod must be the length of a 289 Ford or something, even with a 3.150" stoke? I guess they were bread to sing, rather than grunt.

There were 2 versions of the R-4 block........one for the P-5 head (48º/59º tappet) and one for the wedge. (straight 48º)
Gilberto posted the 4 cylinder block that used a single P-5 HEMI head. There was a Comp Eliminator @ INDY several years ago that ran that......but, assume you meant a V-8 block.
Is this the car?

interesting topic... I was thinking about a r3 block without lifter holes then you can make it fit and get those cubes however many of the p5 castings were crap, I was offered to buy 2 pairs with intakes and hardware for a very god price but the seller advised against me buying !!, because of water leaks and other problems

...This one was for sale here on Moparts & Race Junk in Feb 06 till it fell off the page with no responses. It was the 1st Gen P5 before the plug relocation (P5 HEMI).

...They're closer to a polysphere, & similar to the Fueling. ...You can see the open area's where the next design (Hemi) spark plug's were relocated. This was an X-David Nickens P5 358ci.

The P5 heads shown were considered to be the "Wedge" heads, when the plugs went through the Rocker covers, they started with the Hemi marketing. At the end of the day they are just a Splayed valve wedge head, like the Hemi 99 heads.

Nothing HEMI about what I see except the word on the valve covers.

It's a HEMI, it's not a HEMI. Just a logo, marketing ploy..........It's still probably the baddest SB Mopar head ever made, to date. I'd use a set.
