I'm considering installing a 4 or 6 pt cage in my 70 dart so I can properly /legally mount my shoulder harnesses.Who makes the "best" bar for this application?(fitment/quality)

What are the advantages/disadvantages of going with a chromolly bar?(weight, strength, cost)

thanx
justin

I had a chassie shop build me my hoop and I finished it from there. I just want something that was tight to the roof and most kits that I saw where to low..

As for chromolly they say its stronger but your useing thiner pipe so I'd say its a wash, that being said the molly is lighter than mild steel but again because its thinner, Is it worth the extra money to save 30 lbs. not for me, plus anything you want to add to it later needs to be tig welded. Use the extra money you'd spend on the molly and buy better heads or a new carb, I think you'd see more of a return.

I would get a Comp engineering 6 point bar and only install the drivers side door bar and leave the passenger bar off as its pictured here.. You only need a 5 point bar for your car to run under a 11.49 I think..Phill

Ron, were those door side bars pre-bent, or did the installer do that? Can't recall ever seeing a pre-made kit come with pre-bent side bars like that...

We just installed one from S&W and it was nice. I liked the prenotching that they do. Not much cutting or notching needed. If you have any issues, they are fast to help out.

The best and nicest rollcage is one that is custom built by a chassis shop.

A roll bar that is legal has to be chrome moly. The reason is, can't find anyone who manufactures 1.75" Chrome moly tubing in a .083" wall. The reason you run Chrome moly which is heavier than mild steel by volume is. The chrome moly is much stronger than mild steel and requires thinner material. A basic roll bar requires 1.75 tubing where a cage only requires 1.625 tubing. Phil is right a 5-point is all you are required, but it does nothing for the passenger side of the chassis. If you connect it with 6" by 6" plates you have done little to support the car anyway.

If you have the funds there is no substitute for a chrome moly 12 point cage. Which by the way is 75 lbs. minimum lighter that mild steel. A chassis shop is forced to tig weld chrome moly. Tig weldsare much better looking than wire welds.

I started with a wire welded mild steel roll bar. Two years later I was cutting it out to replace with chrome moly. Do what you want just think about where you will be in a couple years and what money you may piss away to changes.

There is nothing wrong with a mild steel cage if that is all you ever want.
