I had a block sleeved. It has failed and the busted pieces look awful damn thin.

What's a minimum thickness for these things?

Typically they are 1/8 " or 3/32 " which is only .125 and .093 respectively. You still hope to have some parent material to work with behind them, and often on BBM's, you are into water jacekts. You also ( on a straight sleeve install) like to have some thickness at the bottom of the cylinder to "shelf up" against, as well as hope there is some relative thickness part way up the bottom of the cylinder to support the sleeve in the lower portion of the cylinder. There is also cast iron material, and then better ductile iron ( like what Darton uses), so material makes a difference too. Can you post some pics?

Whats a run down of the application, and some sonic check numbers on that bad cylinder before the sleeving etc?

It a 4.5" crank BBF. Originally, I split a cylinder:

Had it fixed:

Now broke:

I have not had the head off, but all the pieces in the intake are magnetic (no aluminum) and both valves are seated at the correct IH.

I wondered if the higher side loading a stroker has possibly contributed to the failure.

Possibly. That is the major thrust side of the block too.Probably just too much for a .125 wall. ( making assupmtions here everything else that we dont know). That shouldnt have been terribly thin being a thrust portion, but again, the sonic check would tell more.

Thats too bad, hate to see that. What does your machine shop have to say? ( what did they measure or "see" when they put that sleeve in?

I went by there today and chatted with them. They didn't say much, but I'm not out to BBQ them. It's a race-type motor so stuff happens. I'm just gonna get another block and start over.

No, wasnt looking to hang them either..this stuff happens, old parts, high stress, racing..it all adds up to poison anyhow...

Good luck on the project.

Ohh looky, a water jacket.

Lovely.

Junk in #1 cylinder

Cylinder head is pocked up pretty good.

Passenger side has some trash too.

Loads of fun.

Have you looked at the IDT blocks? They're the best BBF blocks available right now, and there's a few cost saving options if you're on a budget. we're dealers at Engine Systems (770) 491 0583
