i have a 2004.5 with the 325 hp cummins. which tuner would you guys recommend. i wouldn't mind a little more power, but better economy wouldn't hurt this thing either.
it's loaded all the time with over 4000 lbs in the bed. between that and the 4WD the mileage just plain stinks.
11.5 around town and 17 if i don't drive over 65 mph.

chip opinions will vary all across the board, I put a Bully Dog in my 7.3 power stroke and it came alive. My goal was not to race it, just get better fuel mileage and torque so I went with the 60 hp upgrade and it did the trick. Good Luck with whoever you choose.

I have been out of the diesel game for a bit. I have seen multiple issues with bully dog screwing up the computer. The edge units had too much injector timing at low rpm. I know the smarty cannot be traced by the dealerships also. These where also from trucks that where trying to put the max hp possible. Most of these programmers would be probably be fine but if you are looking something that is much more on the tunable side I say defiantly smarty. For you I would say bump the timing up and just a small amount of fuel and you will be fine, unless the diesel bug bites and then its all over

I have a few friends and customers with the Edge EZ. They all claim better mileage and driveability. To many issues with the BD products. We stay clear and dont recommend the BD crap. This would be my choice. You can buy them in the mid 400 range. If you find a product that works I can shoot you a price as this is what our buisness is.

Recommend running a pyro with any fueling device.

I like my Edge Comp for it's adjustability. Mines in a 99 2wd dually, push the button up to 5 on 5 and hang on. or in the mid setting 22+ mpg empty 16+ pulling approx. 10,000 lb. race trailer. Mileage is higher if I keep it under 2,000 rpm, that's hard to do.

Another vote for the Smarty. The Edge comp was popular with the 2nd genners, but the Smarty seems most popular for the common rail trucks.

I have the Superchips Flashpaq in my '06 Ram Quad cab 4wd w/5.9 Cummins. Simple plug in, a few commands on the unit, and added an instant 130 HP and 270 ft. lds of torque. Truck ran 14.50 @ 98 mph.
Great response and driveability.
In the winter I put it on towing setting (adds 200 ft lbs of torque) for plowing snow.
I havent tried it on fuel economy yet, but I plan on doing it on my trip this weekend to Winona MN.

Dan,

If you're still in the warranty period I'd look at something that can't be detected by the service dept. If you're out of warranty then it probably doesn't matter if they find the tuner box.

I've been running a very basic Edge EZ (no on-the-fly-adjustments) on level 4 for about 90,000 miles and it still works great. I just unplug it when I take the truck in for service.

StageIII predator from Dr Performance since day one on my 06 3500 with 52k on it. As a service manager, I would recommend you use a plug in as opposed to a programmer if you still have any factory Cummins warranty that might be affected. I have heard good things about Smarty and Edge as well... I just know that I can take mine off in 3 minutes if needed.

Get the smarty as it has a lot of tuning options, and can read and clear codes.
