So I took a week of vacation time, started this morning ordering my front suspension and TTI's Spent most of today ordering parts (3 -paychecks this month instead of 2...RTdude, for that carb! and helping pops clean the garage. Charged up the Duster's battery, etc. Tomorrow it goes in the garage and the 517,000 mile 318 comes apart! I'd do this at my house but I do not want to lay in a pile of rocks again while doing the swap! Been there, done that! Today's pics: Torque really wanted to sleep in this morning! Family portrait. That's my old '73 Challenger (Now my brother's car after I got it for free, gave it to him, had it given back to me, spent a bunch of $ on it and sold it back to him to get Lita the '55 Buick 2 door. I could have sold the Duster and kept the Challenger, but sentimental value, Y'know? Dad's '46 Dodge Coupe. 517,000 mile 318. Rebuilt when I was a teen around 250,000 (Bought it with 238K) Clean garage! (Almost) You can see the 360 on the stand next to the Dodge. And here's Torque. He's a big help, as always. The Duster's battery is charged now, and the 360 Magnum I got from OzHemi is ready to roll, the TTI's will be here in a few days along with my suspension kit. MoparVern scored us a firewall from a heater-only car we're welding in, too. My buddy Art is cruising over tomorrow in his '65 Cuda to lend a hand. My dog is fast asleep, it was hard work for him being lazy all day. Stay tuned for more pics tomorrow night!

Anyway, got her in the garage today: The great thing about going with TTI's instead of manifolds is I was able to use the sawzall on the head pipes instead of having to unbolt them from the flange, saving time. The only things remaining to do tomorrow to get the old motor out are pull the tranny crossmember and the motor mounts. then I can bolt the 360 to my 904 hybrid, swap firewalls, clean and paint the engine bay and install the new front suspension. I am uploading an AVI of the 318 running for her very last time and will post it when the upload finishes. Stay tuned for more updates tomorrow.

I may even have a fresh coat of Primer on it for Jimmy's. And I am bringing Torque since apparently dogs are allowed.
Made some more progress today. Will post pics when the upload to photobucket finishes.

Until I collect everything I need to do my Toyota R154 5 speed swap, yes.
No real pics to add today. Did a bunch of grinding in the engine bay and got it in primer, tomorrow I paint it.
I also spent a lot of the day cleaning and masking, painting things I am reusing with semi-gloss, etc.
Tomorrow the K-frame comes out and I receive my F/S kit.

Engine looks very nice.
Is this a 5.9 roller engine or an LA 360 with the magnum heads? Looks like an LA timing cover and water pump.
Might want to freshen up the trans or at least tighten the bands since it's about to see double the power it's used to.
It's a magnum with an early timing cover.

If it's "your" engine then how come you aren't over there helping?
Oz lives in SoCal. They are afraid to set foot in NorCal because they know we'll kill and eat them.
That is an LA cover/pump on a Magnum block as Oz stated. All sorts of fun little bugs to iron out, from the alternator not fitting, having to bend my throttle bracket, to the fact that the Magnum bypass hose is straight and the LA one is angled.
I am running a Comp Cams XE 264/270* .480" and had the heads which I also got from Oz, machined for the recommended valvesprings.
Performer RPM Air Gap
Speed Demon 750 vac. sec. carb
TTi's!
The 904 has the 2.74/1.54 swap with the 5 clutch drum and a MP "145K" torque converter. I am wondering if I should order the 166K or the 175K unit?
The rear as I mentioned before is a 8.25 with 3.21:1's
Ideally it would be a Supra R154 5 speed: * First Gear: 3.250:1 * Second Gear: 1.955:1 * Third Gear: 1.310:1 * Fourth Gear: 1.00:1 * Fifth Gear: 0.753:1
Since it has overdrive I would like to run 3:91's but I hear anything over a 9.5 combined is overkill on the street.
3.25 x 3.21 = 10.43. First is too low? Second is too high to launch in with this trans as well, then?
Maybe I need 2.94's with that tranny for a 9.5?
I am running a 215/65 R15 if that helps.

nice work, man! I recently had to replace the clutch in my 73 Rallye Charger, I decided to go ahead and pull my engine (LA 360) to paint it and the engine bay... here is before and after pics. Jason

Looking good man. Did the heads have any work done to them? Are they standard magnum castings or? It would probably like a little head work, a little more cam, a little more converter, and a little more gear. For driveability I'd say don't take my advise. For maximum fun I'd say DO take my advise.
Better yet, get it running, bring it up here and I'll let you use my shop and "help"
Stock heads other that work for the valve springs.
It'll still be a fire-breather compared to my old stock-piston '73 318.
I ordered a stroker kit to go 408 and was planning more cam, head work, etc. but then Snap-On laid us all off so I re-sold the stroker kit and went closer to stock.
Kinda wish I'd just bought a $5K crate 408 looking back on it, but in a few years I can always pull it back out again and go crazy on it.

I'd be very happy with where you are at. The 408 stroker combo is awesome with a good set of heads and a solid roller but it will rip your car apart without having the frame ties and a roll bar. That was pretty much the demise of my Valiant although it was a four speed. It looks like you will have a good car for a little road tripping. If you end up short on any odds and ends give me a shout and I'll overnight stuff if I have it/can find it. Get to work! We want burnout pics! ... in a ritzxy neighborhood too.

Just got done for the night. Mainly doing lots of little unimpressive stuff right now. Grinding paint from around the excess holes in my engine bay where smog equipment and A/C stuff used to mount, cut out part of the A/C firewall and my patch panel from the spare firewall, ground all the green paint off of it, stuff like that in the engine bay.
Been degreasing and semi-glossing brackets.
Got the Magnum to LA bypass hose puzzle solved, figured out that an LA water neck is too big and I meed one from a SB Ford. Modified the 14 x 3 air cleaner to fit over my new Demon carb and make my old throttle/kickdown stuff work.
My poly front suspension arrived yesterday. On the workday eves I only get a couple hours in, Last week was vacation, remember. More updates this weekend.

Looks great!!!!! So if I read right you are going from a 318 to a 360? You bought a new torque converter for the trans right? Ah you probially did. Looks great and great work
For the absolute best powder coating go to J.I.T powder coating, contact infomation is in my personal profile..

The drivetrain was upgraded back when I swapped the 318 to a 4 bbl. I have the MP 145K converter with a 1st of 2.74 and a 2nd of 1.54. I am running a 3.21:1 rear Tire diameter = 26" Cam is a comp hyd. roller 264/270-480 I will have to find the part #'s of the pistons I ordered to remember the compression, I kept it pretty tame, either 9:1 or 9.5:1...I forget which. Eventually I plan to not have a torque converter at all, via a 3rd pedal so I doubt I'll buy a higher-stall converter right now.

Mine was externally balanced when I got it, sure... It isn't now. I drilled some huge holes in the crank and JB Welded lead fishing weights in there myself Don't knock it, this trick always won me the Pinewood Derby!

I'd like to see pics of your solution for the bypass hose. me, I redrilled my heads to reuse my LA RPM air gap.
BTW, the smaller waterneck is on all '80-up small blocks, and IIRC is the same size as a chevy as well.

I'd like to know, too.
Currently I have a slightly kinked LA hose on there I'd like to not have to use.
Brian, snag me some detail shots and let me know what year/model part it was.

The 360 swap is looking great so far!!
Well, I bought it at 238K and rebuilt the 318 at 250,000.
My second year in college, at about 258K I drove it through the Eel river. Made it across, miraculously. Not something I recommend doing or something I would do twice.

Probably not.
I am considering using 2 short pieces of rubber hose and a whole mess of threaded plumbing fittings.

the other option is to cut 2 holes in the hood and use 12" of universal flex-hose.
I vote for this solution.

I went to the NAPA (where I finally found one) parts store and looked at all the pre-formed hoses there. I picked one that had the closest bend and was the right diameter then just cut it down 'til it fit right. Worked great and koojs good too. I don't even know what car the hose might have been for, only that it had the correct, or close enough, bend si it wouldn't kink.

For the bypass hose - how abouts this big block Olds bypass piece? Installs to a down angle but could do a 90 degree I think.

That patch panel is from the green firewall. When I started I assumed I would not need to install the whole thing but was preparing for the worst if the stampings were "Off."
Glad it didn't come to that.
I did have to weld and redrill the bolt holes from 4 to 3. No biggie.

Engine looks very nice.
Is this a 5.9 roller engine or an LA 360 with the magnum heads? Looks like an LA timing cover and water pump.
Might want to freshen up the trans or at least tighten the bands since it's about to see double the power it's used to.
It is going back to Marcus for some "Anger Management" classes.
He has a 9 second '69 Charger, and helped me build that trans back in '00.

I am more worried about the 8.25. I had one rebuilt back in '96, blew it up in '00 and blew it up again by '02.

STILL don't have it in.
Here's today's pic update though. [/image] (I mix this with rum )
Welding and grinding finished. Light coat of filler ready to block before priming and paint.
Motor/trans together with headers and RTdude's old carb.
On the dolly I welded up. The front half disconnects at the motor mounts and under the oil pan to take the K Frame when it is out and finished.
I got the old 318 out of my way too. Gave it to my friend Steve to use in his '64 Dart GT. VL29G3B336092 is no longer a #'s matching car.

Prior to the blue doors. I got this car for free originally. Rust? what rust? you mean that stuff on the surface 1 or 2 places?
We were going to redo the original doors but they had enough dents and dings and one of them was creased where a tractor hit it. The blue ones were cheap and straight. Came with a $700 '70 parts car.

Just got back from some more work. Got the engine bay painted (Say it ain't so!) so I guess that means I have to paint the car, now. I feel like a closet painter now, oh the shame! Oh well, I'll primer the next one. Also enlisted some friends to help me push her into the garage the other direction, so now I am ready to drop the K-Frame and get to work on the much needed F/S rebuild (Polygraphite this time, and going with the KYB's again) Anyway, here are the latest pics: New planter box? Okay, so I lied. My 318 did not have 517,XXX miles. The last line on my maintenance log was taken at the last oil change 2000 miles before. Dashpad was nice until I moved to Davis in '04. Legendary new at 250K Legendary at 519K Who needs plastic woodgrain? Or anything else. Got a "Panic" button tho! Gonna need new exhaust tips. Some of my welds. Look, guys...RUST! Maybe I should part the car? Mmmmmmmmmmmmm...Cardboard headliner. I think I might reupholster it with Contact paper. And back in the garage the other direction. Stay tuned for the K-Frame removal and suspension rebuild.

Looking good...now you just gotta pressure wash the driveway. . Can't wait till I can get into mine like that. But I'll probably just clean paint, etc while still in the car. Dont think I'm ready to tackle taking it all out. Keep the pics coming. They're really helping to get me excited to do mine. roe
