So I took a week of vacation time, started this morning ordering my front suspension and TTI's

Spent most of today ordering parts (3 -paychecks this month instead of 2...RTdude, for that carb! and helping pops clean the garage. Charged up the Duster's battery, etc. Tomorrow it goes in the garage and the 517,000 mile 318 comes apart! I'd do this at my house but I do not want to lay in a pile of rocks again while doing the swap! Been there, done that!

Today's pics:
Torque really wanted to sleep in this morning!

Family portrait. That's my old '73 Challenger (Now my brother's car after I got it for free, gave it to him, had it given back to me, spent a bunch of $ on it and sold it back to him to get Lita the '55 Buick 2 door.

I could have sold the Duster and kept the Challenger, but sentimental value, Y'know?

Dad's '46 Dodge Coupe.

517,000 mile 318. Rebuilt when I was a teen around 250,000 (Bought it with 238K)

Clean garage! (Almost)

You can see the 360 on the stand next to the Dodge.
And here's Torque. He's a big help, as always.

The Duster's battery is charged now, and the 360 Magnum I got from OzHemi is ready to roll, the TTI's will be here in a few days along with my suspension kit. MoparVern scored us a firewall from a heater-only car we're welding in, too. My buddy Art is cruising over tomorrow in his '65 Cuda to lend a hand. My dog is fast asleep, it was hard work for him being lazy all day.

Stay tuned for more pics tomorrow night!

Here's MoparVern and the Challenger previously:

I have some pics from when we dragged her out of the field, too.

Cameron, if you need any help, give me a buzz or a PM or email or something. While I'm still diagnosing a bunch of stuff, I have it relatively done

I would be tempted to paint the engine bay while the 318 is out

You mean I shouldn't just leave the heater-only firewall green after I weld it in?

Anyway, got her in the garage today:

The great thing about going with TTI's instead of manifolds is I was able to use the sawzall on the head pipes instead of having to unbolt them from the flange, saving time.

The only things remaining to do tomorrow to get the old motor out are pull the tranny crossmember and the motor mounts. then I can bolt the 360 to my 904 hybrid, swap firewalls, clean and paint the engine bay and install the new front suspension.

I am uploading an AVI of the 318 running for her very last time and will post it when the upload finishes.

Stay tuned for more updates tomorrow.

I may even have a fresh coat of Primer on it for Jimmy's. And I am bringing Torque since apparently dogs are allowed.

Made some more progress today. Will post pics when the upload to photobucket finishes.

On a rampage with the simple green and the pressure washer!

I love Simple Green so much I am thinking of replacing the Tonic in a Gin & Tonic with Simple Green!

GASSER STANCE!

Ya gotta keep 'em separated!

My '88 Powell Peralta was very useful!

Until I collect everything I need to do my Toyota R154 5 speed swap, yes.

No real pics to add today. Did a bunch of grinding in the engine bay and got it in primer, tomorrow I paint it.

I also spent a lot of the day cleaning and masking, painting things I am reusing with semi-gloss, etc.

Tomorrow the K-frame comes out and I receive my F/S kit.

Coming right along!

Be cool to see that magnum in place, and then you can find something with in a slant in it...so I can finally see that intake on something

Any more info on this transmission swap? The R154 is a Supra transmission, isn't it?

The R154 Supra trans bolts to the later Dodge truck manual bellhousings. It is a 5 speed used in the '87-'92 (MKIII Turbo) and the shifter is in roughly the right location.

I have seen a full bodied, full interior MKIII at Infineon do a lot of passes with 600+ horsepower, back-halved for a Ford 9" and slicks...Stock tranny.

Sandy in Nova Scotia has one in a Mopar IIRC and I saw it advertized as a swap in kit form in Oz. Most of the tech info I find on the swap is from Marlin Crawler's forum running one behind a 5.9 Magnum in a 2WD.

TTI's arrived this afternoon!

Once I got the old V=belt pulleys switched over (I am using an LA-style water pump)discovered that my old alternator with the stock brackets does not clear the Magnum head casting.

Since you are pulling the K frame, are you going to install the works from underneath?
I remember doing headers in my A engine A body

Affirmative on the car coming down on the K frame.

RTdude is bringing my carb over tomorrow after he gets off work. I am buying his old Demon since he decided his big block needed more carb.

And don't worry about using the alternator, they are just overrated anyways.

So I did some grinding.

And some priming.

My ceramic coated TTi's arrived on my doorstep.

I figured out my alternator bracketry and bent the old throttle bracket from 120* to 90* to go from LA to Magnum.

RTdude stopped by with the 750 Speed Demon he gave me a killer deal on!

Torque was a big help as always, and I could not have undertaken such a project without his help lending a paw.

"Regulators! Mount up!"

Still a lot of work to be done. I have yet to drop the K frame and am still waiting on my poly F/S bushings and new shocks. Feels great to be turning wrenches again and I cannot wait to terrorize small towns with her again!

Cool '46 Dodge Coupe! Is the grinder motor a mock up of things to come?

Be sure to save the AC "delete" tape as well, someone doing an OE resto will pay big bucks for it.

Engine looks very nice.

Is this a 5.9 roller engine or an LA 360 with the magnum heads? Looks like an LA timing cover and water pump.

Might want to freshen up the trans or at least tighten the bands since it's about to see double the power it's used to.

It's a magnum with an early timing cover.

Never tinkered with a 5.9 before.

I didn't know the timing covers and water pumps were interchangable. Every time I have seen a 5.9 in an older car they have retained the serpentine belt setup so I thought that was your only choice.

It stopped being "mine" once it left the Orange County border and headed for "NorCal"

Besides, I am busy enough myself with an engine swap..

Oz lives in SoCal. They are afraid to set foot in NorCal because they know we'll kill and eat them.

That is an LA cover/pump on a Magnum block as Oz stated. All sorts of fun little bugs to iron out, from the alternator not fitting, having to bend my throttle bracket, to the fact that the Magnum bypass hose is straight and the LA one is angled.

I am running a Comp Cams XE 264/270* .480" and had the heads which I also got from Oz, machined for the recommended valvesprings.

Performer RPM Air Gap

Speed Demon 750 vac. sec. carb

TTi's!

The 904 has the 2.74/1.54 swap with the 5 clutch drum and a MP "145K" torque converter. I am wondering if I should order the 166K or the 175K unit?

The rear as I mentioned before is a 8.25 with 3.21:1's

Ideally it would be a Supra R154 5 speed:
* First Gear: 3.250:1
* Second Gear: 1.955:1
* Third Gear: 1.310:1
* Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
* Fifth Gear: 0.753:1

Since it has overdrive I would like to run 3:91's but I hear anything over a 9.5 combined is overkill on the street.

3.25 x 3.21 = 10.43. First is too low? Second is too high to launch in with this trans as well, then?

Maybe I need 2.94's with that tranny for a 9.5?

I am running a 215/65 R15 if that helps.

nice work, man!
I recently had to replace the clutch in my 73 Rallye Charger, I decided to go ahead and pull my engine (LA 360) to paint it and the engine bay... here is before and after pics.

Looking good man. Did the heads have any work done to them? Are they standard magnum castings or? It would probably like a little head work, a little more cam, a little more converter, and a little more gear. For driveability I'd say don't take my advise. For maximum fun I'd say DO take my advise.

Better yet, get it running, bring it up here and I'll let you use my shop and "help"

Stock heads other that work for the valve springs.

It'll still be a fire-breather compared to my old stock-piston '73 318.

I ordered a stroker kit to go 408 and was planning more cam, head work, etc. but then Snap-On laid us all off so I re-sold the stroker kit and went closer to stock.

Kinda wish I'd just bought a $5K crate 408 looking back on it, but in a few years I can always pull it back out again and go crazy on it.

I'd be very happy with where you are at. The 408 stroker combo is awesome with a good set of heads and a solid roller but it will rip your car apart without having the frame ties and a roll bar. That was pretty much the demise of my Valiant although it was a four speed.

It looks like you will have a good car for a little road tripping.

If you end up short on any odds and ends give me a shout and I'll overnight stuff if I have it/can find it.

Get to work!

We want burnout pics! ... in a ritzxy neighborhood too.

Just got done for the night. Mainly doing lots of little unimpressive stuff right now. Grinding paint from around the excess holes in my engine bay where smog equipment and A/C stuff used to mount, cut out part of the A/C firewall and my patch panel from the spare firewall, ground all the green paint off of it, stuff like that in the engine bay.

Been degreasing and semi-glossing brackets.

Got the Magnum to LA bypass hose puzzle solved, figured out that an LA water neck is too big and I meed one from a SB Ford. Modified the 14 x 3 air cleaner to fit over my new Demon carb and make my old throttle/kickdown stuff work.

My poly front suspension arrived yesterday. On the workday eves I only get a couple hours in, Last week was vacation, remember. More updates this weekend.

Looks great!!!!!

So if I read right you are going from a 318 to a 360? You bought a new torque converter for the trans right? Ah you probially did.

Looks great and great work

The drivetrain was upgraded back when I swapped the 318 to a 4 bbl.

I have the MP 145K converter with a 1st of 2.74 and a 2nd of 1.54.

I am running a 3.21:1 rear

Tire diameter = 26"

Cam is a comp hyd. roller 264/270-480

I will have to find the part #'s of the pistons I ordered to remember the compression, I kept it pretty tame, either 9:1 or 9.5:1...I forget which.

Eventually I plan to not have a torque converter at all, via a 3rd pedal so I doubt I'll buy a higher-stall converter right now.

I believe Garret was refering too the fact 360's are externally balanced...

I thought the late model ones are still extrenally balanced just don't require the jumbo weight... Be the first to admit I don't know late model stuff that well but....

Mine was externally balanced when I got it, sure...

It isn't now.

I drilled some huge holes in the crank and JB Welded lead fishing weights in there myself

Don't knock it, this trick always won me the Pinewood Derby!

Yeah, that's another thing I remembered to do tonight. Before bolting the new flexplate to the crank I matched it to the torque converter boltholes and made a big ol' line with a permanent marker. My first 318 rebuild I had no idea the holes were slightly offset, so I had to have a buddy use a breaker bar on the damper bolt while I played a very slow and frustrating game of "Trial and error" wedged underneath the Duster.

If the torque converter has a drain plug & Mopars generally do.. You'll find there is a small hole (9/32ish) in the flex plate that lines up with the plug but I thinking 180 out.. It's been to long I can't say with certainty... Suffering from Part Timers...

Mine does not have a drain plug, I rotated the 318 crank with a socket and breaker bar looking for it (Out of the car this time. See hoist pics ) as I unbolted the flexplate.

My stocker in the 318/904 did, my MP unit does not.

I'd like to see pics of your solution for the bypass hose. me, I redrilled my heads to reuse my LA RPM air gap.

BTW, the smaller waterneck is on all '80-up small blocks, and IIRC is the same size as a chevy as well.

I literally took like some Honda Civic 1" hose and cut it down. It looks crappy, but they don't have any bulk 1" hose where I am.

how'd you handle the 90 degree turn? or does the honda hose have a molded bend in it?

With the motor having 517k on it, I take it that the duster has been very reliable

The 360 swap is looking great so far!!

I'd like to know, too.

Currently I have a slightly kinked LA hose on there I'd like to not have to use.

Brian, snag me some detail shots and let me know what year/model part it was.

Well, I bought it at 238K and rebuilt the 318 at 250,000.

My second year in college, at about 258K I drove it through the Eel river. Made it across, miraculously. Not something I recommend doing or something I would do twice.

Can you insert a spring inside the bypass hose to keep it from collapsing, like the lower radiator hoses have?

Probably not.

I am considering using 2 short pieces of rubber hose and a whole mess of threaded plumbing fittings.

If you have some tubing you could make one of these on a smaller scale and just use rubber at each end.

http://www.hotrodscustomstuff.com/Cars/Road%20Tour%20Car/SR%20Guide/final-05.jpg

They do make 45 degree fittings for the intake, but I'm thinking the odds of getting it clocked in the right spot and tight enough at the same time aren't very good, plus it might look kinda half-arsed.

the other option is to cut 2 holes in the hood and use 12" of universal flex-hose.

I'm sure the dimensions in the picture are wrong, but something like this in the intake may work.

Something like that would be perfect if I thought I had the clearance to thread it more than half a turn at best.

I went to the NAPA (where I finally found one) parts store and looked at all the pre-formed hoses there. I picked one that had the closest bend and was the right diameter then just cut it down 'til it fit right. Worked great and koojs good too.
I don't even know what car the hose might have been for, only that it had the correct, or close enough, bend si it wouldn't kink.

Pops and I broke out the Lincoln and got some welding in. Not the best welds, but they do the job. Then again my car already tells you I am not the best painter either.

Tack'd!

AC to non-AC conversion?

Welds look good. If you haven't already completed the grinding use one of those 80 grit flapper wheels instead. They are a plastic backed disk full of little sandpaper squares. They offer a lot better control over the finish + less grooves and scratches than a hard disk.

Indeed. I chucked the A/C stuff a few months before I was 16 even, LOL!

I have, in fact, NOT completed the grinding. I will go seek one out. Thanks for the tip!

Hardware stores usually have them. Make sure you get the right diameter so it fits inside the guard.

For the bypass hose - how abouts this big block Olds bypass piece?

Installs to a down angle but could do a 90 degree I think.

That patch panel is from the green firewall. When I started I assumed I would not need to install the whole thing but was preparing for the worst if the stampings were "Off."

Glad it didn't come to that.

I did have to weld and redrill the bolt holes from 4 to 3. No biggie.

Engine looks very nice.

Is this a 5.9 roller engine or an LA 360 with the magnum heads? Looks like an LA timing cover and water pump.

Might want to freshen up the trans or at least tighten the bands since it's about to see double the power it's used to.

It is going back to Marcus for some "Anger Management" classes.

He has a 9 second '69 Charger, and helped me build that trans back in '00.

Yes. Stay tuned...Don't change the channel! We'll be right back!

I am more worried about the 8.25. I had one rebuilt back in '96, blew it up in '00 and blew it up again by '02.

When I moved to Davis suddenly I could not work on the Duster very much. Either the ex had me working on the '55 Buick I got her or we lived somewhere wrenching was not allowed.

I did not have a digital camera back in '03/'04 when Khal440 and I ware over-restoring his '72 Swinger in my garage (Which I basically got evicted for, but that is a whole different story)

This engine swap has been awesome. I loved dusting off the tools and digging back in again!

Who knows, next year it might be bodywork and paint! (Say it ain't so) or I may just go back to using her as a daily driver and keep the '96 Breeze as the dog car.

Wow, that is WAY nicer than what I am accustomed to. Given my track record at Stu's I am not so sure how happy his wife would be about me crashed out in the driveway though.

STILL don't have it in.

Here's today's pic update though.

[/image]
(I mix this with rum )

Welding and grinding finished. Light coat of filler ready to block before priming and paint.

Motor/trans together with headers and RTdude's old carb.

On the dolly I welded up. The front half disconnects at the motor mounts and under the oil pan to take the K Frame when it is out and finished.

I got the old 318 out of my way too. Gave it to my friend Steve to use in his '64 Dart GT. VL29G3B336092 is no longer a #'s matching car.

Prior to the blue doors. I got this car for free originally. Rust? what rust? you mean that stuff on the surface 1 or 2 places?

We were going to redo the original doors but they had enough dents and dings and one of them was creased where a tractor hit it. The blue ones were cheap and straight. Came with a $700 '70 parts car.

Back when the Duster was still a 318 car I was driving it out to the beach a LOT in my early 20's. I loved nothing more than roaring thru the sleepy little town of "Bolinas" (Google it) at 3 am with the duals roaring like Lemmy. Take that, you quaint, sleepy little Marin hippie town!

Just got back from some more work. Got the engine bay painted (Say it ain't so!) so I guess that means I have to paint the car, now. I feel like a closet painter now, oh the shame!

Oh well, I'll primer the next one.

Also enlisted some friends to help me push her into the garage the other direction, so now I am ready to drop the K-Frame and get to work on the much needed F/S rebuild (Polygraphite this time, and going with the KYB's again)

Anyway, here are the latest pics:

New planter box?

Okay, so I lied. My 318 did not have 517,XXX miles.

The last line on my maintenance log was taken at the last oil change 2000 miles before.

Dashpad was nice until I moved to Davis in '04.

Legendary new at 250K

Legendary at 519K

Who needs plastic woodgrain? Or anything else. Got a "Panic" button tho!

Gonna need new exhaust tips.

Some of my welds.

Look, guys...RUST! Maybe I should part the car?

Mmmmmmmmmmmmm...Cardboard headliner.

I think I might reupholster it with Contact paper.

And back in the garage the other direction. Stay tuned for the K-Frame removal and suspension rebuild.

looking really good! great before and after pics. you are making serious progress...but if you paint that car it will be like the end of the pre-smog era, or the beatles breaking up, or finding out there is no santa. just the end of an era, and the sad realization that you can never go home again.

So when you say you're gonna paint the car you mean with a fresh coat of Primer right?

Think of it as the beginning of a new one? Or the return to a very distant one? (Note the Mom and Dad's old '85 Colt Vista.

No, it'll be a normal glossy shade of white, but I may do it with a roller.

Not to worry, everyone. Even after I paint the car and the steelies, the stripe will be matte black and the hood will still be in Primer!

All this painting stuff and that polished engine has me wondering if his account has been hijacked.

I wonder how long until he starts asking about what type of wax is best and what brand of car cover to buy?

Pressure-washed the road grime

By the time everything dried I realized I was out of semi-gloss, and it would be getting dark by the time I returned with more, so I will do that after work tomorrow.

Looking good...now you just gotta pressure wash the driveway. . Can't wait till I can get into mine like that. But I'll probably just clean paint, etc while still in the car. Dont think I'm ready to tackle taking it all out.

Keep the pics coming. They're really helping to get me excited to do mine.

Looks more like surface rust + leftover insulation glue to me. My dart looked like that and it cleaned up fine.

Thanks, but I know. Surface rust and leftover foam gack. I was inside there welding, remember, so I got a good look at it.

I will be handling that when I pull the windshield and dash. I have a black dash without the holes for the fake woodgrain and a good pad that I will be swapping in. I will be installing an 18 watt Marshall tube amp IN the dashboard. I will handle the cowl then.

When I ditch the rear seat I will be installing a carpeted shelf for my dog that will unlatch and double as a Stratocaster or Explorer case.

I've actually thought that a few times. Of course, then it would be too nice to drive and I am chomping at the bit to drive her again!

Great work Cameron on you ride. Man I know how hard it is doing a project like yours in the garage. I am doing it on my 66 Satellite project. The good news on that front is now I have a shop I am renting so I can do lots more as time allows. I think us Nor-Cal guys should get together and team up for work parties on our projects. I mean fire up the "Barbe", cool some beverages, and torque some wrenches. Keep us posted and I will try and do the same. Just remember this...When the Cap City Mopar's show is on next year I have an emergency shop on the way for repairs and cold beverages.....cr8crshr/Bill

Thanks, Bill!

Got some painting in with the semi gloss and did some grinding around areas of the K frame I will be rewelding. No pics. Will be making small steps during the week.

I'll post some tomorrow. Getting ready to put the f/s back together. Got the radiator support and everything all blacked out.

Forgot the camera yesterday.

Over the weekend:

NO ONE will see thru my grille.

Yes, I know the factory was a lot less through doing this.

Done re-welding the K Frame and finished up my low profile steel K-Frame dolly!

That's it for now.

looks like fun!

Reminds me of my Dart when it was in pieces, while I wondered if I'd ever get to drive it.

Cool pics, thanks.

Got the K Frame all reassembled, the wiring in place, the hood latch and lower grille mount in place as well.

And the bumper resto too. I'll get to the dent removal later.

I removed all the bracketry, wire wheeled off all the rust scale naval jellied, washed, primed with high-zinc primer, and then the raw steel parts were semi-glossed, the back of the chrome parts was shot with "aluminum" over the high-zinc.

My brother's birthday is soon, so I did the replacement bumper for his Challenger, too. My camera's battery died so I do not have any pics of the finished product but it looks AWESOME!

As for the dent removal...See that dent in the upper corner?

GONE!

There was also a dent behind the front plate where it looked like they used the Duster to push someone by the trailer hitch. Also gone now. You can see where I beat it with a wood block and a sledge. The corner was done on a 2x4 with a steel bodywork dolly and a sledge.

Not too shabby for a cheap hack with a spray-painted '73 A Body 318 car..
