Today's silly schedule:
Up at 4:30 Travel to South El Monte, start workday at 6:20 Depart S.E.M. at 14:05 In slow & go traffic, approach south I-5 to east SR-78 interchange at 15:30
15:30:10 engine dies doing 45mph in left lane at the start of two lane uphill 270 degree sweeping right transition ramp 15:30:12 evetS kicks car into neutral, hits starter, hears sound of compressionless [timing belt-less] engine 15:30:14 signal right, shoot small gap, coast to right shoulder (which people routinely drive in as they cut the corner) and use last bit of momentum to hop the asphalt berm into the ice plant 15:30:20 dial *AAA on cell phone 15:31:00 after 40 seconds of hold message, get connected to human being 15:33 finish giving particulars and precarious location of dead car, receive ETA estimate of 20 minutes 15:36 receive automated callback confirming tow truck is on the way with ETA of 15:55 15:45 tow truck arrives, driver does temporary hookup, almost gets nailed twice by semis cutting the corner of the curve 15:50 tow truck and car make it off transition ramp to safer location at the side of SR-78, push paper, strap car down 16:10 arrive home, pay small mileage overage + tip, listen to 10 minutes of driver's personal stories 16:20 enter home, unwind, relate story to wife and teenagers, concentrating on object lesson of quick diagnosis and maximizing momentum to get car out of traffic lanes to less dangerous location 16:45 dinner 17:30 confirm broken timing belt, gather tools and spare belt from inventory, install timing belt 18:30 put away tools, clean up, take test drive to gas station, fill up 19:00 return home, unload car (paperwork, laptop, ice chest) 19:15 post story
