I don't know - I'm driving out to Columbus tomorrow then visiting the Wright-Patterson Air Force museum on thursday, then driving to Harrisburg on friday for Carlisle saturday.

There are a lot of things in & around DC to see. Start with the monuments, then hit the Smithsonian.

I love DC, been there a few times and just took my parents there a few weeks ago. But on the 4th forget visiting any Smithsonians - lines are insane. By the time the fireworks are ready to go, there may be an extra 500,000 visitors in the area.

I threaded the crowd last year and it was really a lot of fun, good feelings all around. Parade in the early, lots of cool cultural stuff in the Mall's open space, various ethnic food pavillions that were tasty, lots of different live music like the marine corp stage and such before the fireworks show.

Yeah - for first DC visit better to go another time when its more mellow. I know a great hotel in a great area within walking distance of the Mall. Last time I walked to the Jefferson Memorial, around the tidal basin to the FDR memorial and JFK memorial.
