Oh yes, I have seen it zombonies of times. I grew up about two blocks from it.

The old sign was a lot cooler. It had multiple tubes, the fisherman rocked in the boat as he played the fish, it moved too.

Every once in a while my brother & I could talk dad into driving downtown if we were out after dark for a drive under it. It was pretty cool for really bored 3-5 years old kids.

That does sound cool! You just don't see neat signs like that any more..

.... and you rarely see them from inside a VW micro bus.

I used it to help set a vacuum cleaner on fire a little later. But, that is a different story for another time.

I remember it quite well, but dad's version may be funnier since it is from the adult perspective. I'll see if I can get him to write it down.

Mom & dad volunteered every so often to clean their church. Vacuuming, dusting & so on. My brother & I were about 6 (him) & 4 (me) at the time.

We got bored & were playing outside in the parking lot. I discovered the gas cap on the VW microbus & removed it.

My brother suggested that we try & fill the tank with stuff so dad would not have to wait at the gas station as long to fill it.

Great idea!

Gravel, old spark plugs, dandelions, leaves, anything we could find. If it fit down the tube it went in.

One of the parent's checked up on us & saw what we were up to by looking out a window.

The fun ended.

Dad borrowed the vaccum cleaner from the building & tried sucking the stuff out of the tank via the fill tube.

It was working great until the gas vapors went through the electric motor & ignited.

Vacuum cleaners in such cases can continue to run for quite a while, think of a flame thrower in reverse. Unplugging is the way to go, the on / off switch gets hot fast.

It is funny now, but I could not sit down for quite a while afterwards, & rightfully so.

Oh to have had a video camera then....

I can still remember it quite clearly. Whooosh!
