I'll be going to the Nats for the first time this year, and entered in the trophy class races. I have not tried my car out on the track yet, it's not a race car, more of a hot rod...528 hemi Coronet 4 speed. I haven't raced in years, and was wondering if it would be worth the trouble of running there. Are there typically lots of cars running in that class? Are you able to get any shake down runs in?

Yeah, it's got a hemi........a REAL hemi.

get ready to sit around a LOT waiting in the sweltering heat, waiting for time runs and eliminations. We tried in once and it all seemed very disorganized.

Thanks for the heads up. That's kind of what I thought it would be like at a big meet like that....

Yeah, it's got a hemi........a REAL hemi.

Racing at the Nats stunk 17 years ago when I went and I swore I would never go again. I had an idea to race in Trophy and/or Street this year with my D150. I was going to race my Dart for points on Saturday at my local track here in NJ. Then leave and drive straight thru to Columbus to race on Sunday. But there are no entries and tech allowed on Sunday. Good Move Nats Mgmt!!! Don`t allow racers that race points at other tracks on Saturdays race at your meet on Sunday. This is one of the reasons the Nats suck for racers!!!

I "sponsored" my friend running his 93 Grand Cherokee there about 8 years ago. The nats is more show than race, and the trophy class seemed to get the least love. There were probably only 35-40 cars in the first round. We made it to 9 cars, then Bill tried to push the tree. Bad move for a guy that drag races about every 5 years!

that place is the biggest cluster you know what i have seen when you are trying to race.a couple years back they only had one trophy for all classes.you got your picture taken ,then had to give it back for the next class winner to get his pic taken.50,000 people wandering around the pits acting like the have never seen a race car before.at a track owned by nhra, and the don`t have a natl, event there anymore.track leaves a lot to be desired.still,it is the nats.

I ran it one year in my daily driver shelby Daytona 5 speed. It had a full load of luggage for 3 guys, a cooler, and a 200+ lb passenger. We went 7 rounds to the semis before losing to a 4x4 truck that ran dead on. One of the funnest days racing ever, I think my passenger was having more fun then me.

Boy, I have to tell you I am always amazed at the guys who think racing at the Nats is a bad experience. We raced the trophy class before and it was great! And I have raced many times in the Max Wedge class and had a ball. When racing the trophy class we just parked on the grass till we got called, and quite frankly, hanging out in the stage lanes is fun as well. If you bring your car in a trailer and get to park in the pits, its even better still. It’s a great time. I guess I can see the guys racing in Pro or Super Pro probably have a lot more to go through due to the number of cars, but to me that is part of the fun. I bet if you race you'll have a ball and want to do it every year. Good luck to you!!

The racing isn't bad if your running trophy/street/pro (no offense, their just not as traction dependant) and there to enjoy the atmosphere. I won't go anymore to run Q16, the track sucks and borderline dangerous, and going to the semi's payed a whopping $75. The NTR peeps don't know how to run a program or prep a track. The last time I went they were running us after trophy, I had to tell Jim Belinda to talk to the track and run us after a slick class before someone got hurt.

I wouldn`t bring my race car I was going to race my 15 second truck. My main complaint is that I can`t come Sunday only and race. An acquaintence won Super Street at the Nat. Meet at Columbus not long before I went in 92 and he told me how bad it was. He was right, I see not much has changed.

528 hemi/4speed - Come race in the stick shift class

I always thought the track prep was pretty good at NTR, but then again, I don't have a 6sec car

I agree 100%. I've raced the trophy class numerous years with my 11 second street car and had a blast every time.

And as far as the track prep goes, it was good enough last year for me to run a career best (11.71 ET at 116 mph with 1.61 second 60') on Saturday morning and then snap my ring & pinion later that afternoon.

The guys I go with have cars that run anywhere from 9.90 to low 11's and they've never had any traction problems at National Trail.

The Nats are an event, not a regular weekend race day. If you expect to run around the pits like a madman and get 10 time trials, it's your expectations that are the problem. Not the Nats.

I only need one time shot, (if I had to I could go into eliminations without one )and track prep isn`t much of a concern in a 15 second truck. I still don`t know why I can come on SUNDAY, pay, get teched and race. You would think they would want as many cars as possible. Which leads me to believe that they really aren`t concerned with the racers, just grabbing entry fees for the whole weekend not single day entries. The way I see it the more cars. more $$$. limiting the entries to the whole weekend is stupid. But like I said they really don`t care much about the racers it was like that way back in 92 and it looks like its still that way.

Good Idea Aspen, But they aren`t teching or accepting entries on Sunday, the only day I`d be coming. Hence my complaint.

that sounds legal, safe, and I'm sure there won't be any liability issues if someone gets hurt.

That's not what my paperwork says, it says that I must give them the card when arrive to have the car teched at the far end of the track. I presume that they will give out stickers once your car is teched per NHRA rules......

Yeah, it's got a hemi........a REAL hemi.

Good Responses, but it still doesn`t answer my question of why I can`t come on Sunday pay and race. I guess the Mopar Nats mgmt doesn`t bother to go on such a great and popular Mopar website.
