Light travels faster than the speed of sound,,,this is why some people seem bright untill you hear them speak.

Somethings wrong. My tunnel ram setup ran 9's in the 1/4 and would idle at 900-1000 all day.

Well, my cam isn't the smallest out there. It is like 660 lift w/ 332 duration. At 1800 you can hear each cylinder fire with open headers.

I just fired the new engine this week (383 + .030, 4.25 stroke, Engle roller - 262 @ .050, 1.6 Harland Sharps, Herbert lifters and Herbert HERS637 springs).

Have idle set at 1200 due to people here and on speedtalk.com recommending higher idle to keep lifters' rollers lubed.

I could probably set the idle down to around 900 or so, but the convertor allows smooth engagement into gear at the present speed, and I don't want to 'learn something the hard (money) way'.

Right now I have to put smaller restricters in the heads, since the HS rockers allow all the oil to FLY out the rocker shafts...

Will be checking rollers periodically for a while to make sure they're hanging in there.

.02 and a bump...

That's been my experience, too (albeit with stuff like 230-240 degree hydraulics).

Must have lucked out w/ two junkyard 275HP/327 Chev AVS carbs on an M1, since it idles and drives nicely after 4-5 min warming up.

From the looks of the soot in your carbs you might want to try more initial timing. I had that problem when I first built my engine. Put an MSD distributor in it with the big stop and weakest springs and fixed it.
