Not quite as dramatic but a similar thing happens with moonshine, since it brings it's own oxygen in with it you need less air to burn the fuel, or in other words you can burn more fuel and make more power and it is way more forgiving than nitro

Nitro explodes?

Why does this still get posted?
If it exploded, how long would a fuel engine last?
Until the plug fired the first time...

Exactly. Actually nitro burns pretty slowly. That's why it's still burning when it exits the header pipes resulting in the 6 foot flames you see at night with T/F cars.

we used to have a saying...

gas is for washing parts
alcohol is for drinking
nitro is for racing

always got a kick out of that one. dont know where it came from.

I thought it was funny on the newest fast and furious the main guy (his name escapes me right now) said nitro was for sissies I don't think his car made 8000 hp

As for the nitro exploding bit it comes from non-chemists confuseing Nitromethane with Nitroglycerine. Nitroglycerine is explosive, drop a bottle of it on the ground and it explodes, nitromeathane will not do that

Nitromethane has a much different burn rate than gasoline or alcohol. It is harder to get lit, but once it goes, it goes. IIRC, about half the fuel volume run through the motor is simply for cooling to keep the motor from instantly eating itself.

NHRA Today had a segment from MSD about the difference in spark from a gas/alky ignition and a fuel magneto. Gas ignition would jump a spark about 3 inches. Mag would shoot a flame out over a foot.

i had to use the coldest spark plug on my nitro harley. for my application that turned out to be a 5hp briggs and stratton motor plug. it fit the head and worked like a champ. gapped at like .016 also...

Also the reason for 60+ deg. of spark advance.

Yeah, it's got a smallblock.

Tip the can you sissies

J/k, don't it's dangerous.

I will admit to some scientific research Rolled the mag back in some snowmobiles and tipped the can a bit. Made a few nice passes before a very impressive explosion ended the racing and almost killed me.

I own an injected nitro front engine dragster. 50 in the mag, 90 in the tank, and the whole -1 pump going into the motor on a fifteen pound idle check (7gallon per minute!) Thing sounds like it will turn the earth over. I also have a couple of bracket customers that'll mix 10 to 15 percent just playing around, never hurt a part. Cool stuff, and it's cheaper than c25

I remember an article in HR some years ago about old hemis and nitro running in a nostalgia gasser class. The best advice I gathered was the line "Give it the same respect you would a pipe bomb"

I know lot's of guys with injected TADs. Myself I've ran plenty of nitro thru a alky injected 632 big chief pontiac back in 91-94 Quailfied low(#1) at EVERY Spitzer super quick race one year and won a race on nitro. It was a blast, more fun than running a TAD.
