At the mopar nationals, woodburn my car was finally running good and hooking up some what good. I was cutting good lights and going rounds and the a guy said, hey do you know your leaking oil. My very costly milodon pan made for a big block dakota swap cracked. The crack is small but dumping to much oil to continue. after the pan cooled down the crack closed and doesn't leak but just a little. I was wondering if it is possible to weld this in place as it's a total pain to pull the engine. It's a low deck 512 in a 76 pacer.

I was thinking of getting as much oil out as can and fill the pan with CO2 then weld it. Is this stupid or might it work.

Is the crack down in the sump? Drain the pan good and mig it up, small tacks. Just make sure your ground is on the pan itself, as you can tear up the brgs if it grounds thru them. My

Just did that last week to a friends car, drained the oil out, cleaned & MIG welded. No co 2 or anything. turned out great.

Works for some.. I was working at a shop the guy in the next stall tried to MIG a crack up it seemed like a good plan then there was a Wooof sound & the pan had a new rounder shape.... When he lowered the lift we found the valve covers didn't like the pressure much either... Fill the crankcase with inert gas...

I busted one on a work car many years ago. A friend of my brothers came out and brazed it up for me. It ran that way for a long time with no leaks.

I have done it many times on the car, drain it, I
grind the area clean, spray with carb/brake cleaner
then blow air through the oil filler cap, weld it
up.... set up time usually takes longer than the welding
(like said above.... ground the pan itself)

The crack is in the bottom rear about 2 inches from the drain plug. Wten running air in the oil fill should the drain plug be out or in?

Thanks George..

I leave the drain plug out during the whole process
(allow the air to move better)... doesnt need to be
alot of air, just to move the vapors out

I'd either fill it with inert gas....or use
J-B STIK. I used on a pan and a gas tank and it lasted many years (before I sold the car)

this stuff:

I welded a pan in place (steel)... once.

I wouldn't do it again. Was more of a PITA than pulling the pan would have been.

And, what about the ash from the fine amount of residual oil that'll be inside the pan?

And, how are you going to clean ALL the oil out of the crack that you're welding?

To say nothing of the previous poster whose friend got hurt.

This ain't to say it can't be done. Obviously, it can. Just that there are some 'opportunities for learning experiences' that could possibly happen.

If it were mine, I'd just use some yamabond/hondabond to stick a patch of beer can over the offending crack until the pan could be removed for a proper repair.

Oh, and the genuine honda or yamaha sealants are GOOD - no worries.

Seduce the attractive, and charm the rest. ****** 489 C.I.D., roller cam, aftermarket heads, tunnel ram, stock '54 Dodge rear axle assembly: which of these doesn't belong?

I've never had any issue welding them on car(done
plenty).... oil will burn if there is any in there
but it sure wont explode.... gas explodes... stick
your nose to the drain hole and smell if there is
any gas vapor... if so let it air for a period of time

I just finished welding the crack up with no problems. I went an inch past the crack both ways, used a magnetic ground to the pan as close as possible, air down the oil fill.

Thanks For the help!!

I was a little late to chime in here but when I weld cracks of any kind I always drill a hole at the end of each crack. This helps prevent occurrence.
