Check to make sure the clutch cross shaft arm is not bending. Clutch break-in = fantasy tale!

Well, after reading some posts, I could be wrong. - how rare is that!!

Know that you guys have that settled, how about this:

I pulled the adjustment rod out to add another nut, and it looks like it may have been installed wrong, causing it not to lock. The nut has a regular side and a flared side with slits and it was with the flared side towards the z bar. I'm assuming that it should probably be towards the metal washer causing it to be locked by the pressure from the washer? Also the adjustment rod has a flat side with hook piece off center. Does the flat side go on the side where it connects to the z bar or the opposite side where it connects?
Thanks,
Jim

This maybe somewhat generic but I don't think it should be much differet between a '68 (what I have) and your '71.

I agree, that the nut should have the serated side facing the washer, then the washer to the insulator, then the rod into the release fork.

If your talking about the side with the offset, from the best of my memory, when I did mine I tried it with the offset towards the frame and the offset towards the engine. I don't remember which way I ended up with but I did it so the adjustment rod appeared to be most perpendicular to the cluthc fork, if that makes any sense. In other words, just try to keep things at 90 degree angles and not canted.

Jim,

I just went out to check my adjustment rod.

The flat part of the threaded section that's smooth and has no threads, faces the frame, away from the engine. At least on mine.

Hope that helps.

FRank

That figures, I put mine on the other way. Does anyone else know if they have it on one side or the other?

Jim,

I don't think it gonna matter that much either way. The offset is slight and as long as your 90 degrees to the clutch fork it should be OK.

I don't know if that's gonna resolve the chatter issue but I'm sure your like me. I still want it right even if it works wrong.

Good luck
Frank
