This maybe somewhat generic but I don't think it should be much differet between a '68 (what I have) and your '71. I agree, that the nut should have the serated side facing the washer, then the washer to the insulator, then the rod into the release fork. Quote:
Also the adjustment rod has a flat side with hook piece off center. Does the flat side go on the side where it connects to the z bar or the opposite side where it connects?
If your talking about the side with the offset, from the best of my memory, when I did mine I tried it with the offset towards the frame and the offset towards the engine. I don't remember which way I ended up with but I did it so the adjustment rod appeared to be most perpendicular to the cluthc fork, if that makes any sense. In other words, just try to keep things at 90 degree angles and not canted.

Jim, I just went out to check my adjustment rod. The flat part of the threaded section that's smooth and has no threads, faces the frame, away from the engine. At least on mine. Hope that helps. FRank

Jim, I don't think it gonna matter that much either way. The offset is slight and as long as your 90 degrees to the clutch fork it should be OK. I don't know if that's gonna resolve the chatter issue but I'm sure your like me. I still want it right even if it works wrong. Good luck Frank
