How do you check a battery with a multi meter, I put a new battery in my tractor and had to boost it to start it, then my daughter needed a battery so I put that battery from the tractor in her car and it needs to be boosted to start most times, this is a new battery, could it be defective.
Thanks Dave

Assume it is sealed so you can't hydrometer test it. Load test is the only way. You can check the state of charge - fully charged 12 vlt batt should read 13.2 volts and should not drop below 9.6 volts during cranking.

take two screw drivers. One on each post..now touch them together. If they try and weld themselves your battery is good.

or a load tester works well

it's basically a giant heater element, and gets red hot, and measures how many amps your battery can put out.

And if your lucky, wether you have a sealed battery or not, it might vent some hydrogen gases and blow up in your face, so you can spend a relaxing day in the burn center after visting the ER

PS...the effect is even better if you do it with a lit cigarette dangling from your lips
