Has anyone ever installed a gear drive on a big block Mopar before? This is my first and need advice. First off before anyone says anything, I am already sure it's going to be loud and annoying. That said, I am installing it anyways.

So, my question is, on the middle set of "idler" gears, do the big thicker areas go to the front(timing cover)side or do they face the block side. My instructions suck and not very specific. I have a pic of it installed with the thick side facing front (timing cover)side. I think it may go the other way though.

Thanks,Vinny

WELL! funny you ask... If this is the CAT one there's a hole series of crap that I had to do to make it work that they failed to mention in the instructions. So since I don't want to have to figure out to download images you can email me for images unless someone can tell me how I can download directly from my computer to here. I had to fab a spacer out of 1/8th inch aluminum that went on before the crank gear in order to move the oil slinger far enough away from the driver side idler button and still retain proper tolerances with the timing cover. I installed the idler button long ends towards the inside then had to grind the drivers side button down as much as possible and still have enough steel to retain the "C" clip (about 1/16")which moved the idler gear as far back as possible THEN... you have to grind down the cam gear button for proper tolerances... THEN dry install the timing cover and check all tolerances one more time and (preferably with the spark plugs pulled) hand turn the motor to make absolute freaken sure everything is smooth. Then you can reinstall the cover proper and your good to go!
P.S. I got the quiet version which sounds like a Mc Donald Douglas DC-10 turbine engine (way freaken cool!)

How ironic...It is a CAT one. Great, just what I wanted. I have to re-invent the wheel to install it,huh? Crap. This sucks.

Okay got the attachment thing figured out. The first was the shim I fabbed. I suppose you could put it between the gear and the slinger but I figured it would be more stable in back. Also I probably should have used the passenger side idler button as a means of tolerancing the idler gear and the timing cover but there isn't really a way to tell if you have adequate clearance unless you use the gasket thickness as your means of measuring. You'd have to reduce the diameter of the idler button in order to clear the slinger... Mines flush with the front link bar that connects the two idler gears and I filed down the face of the aluminum shim just enough to feel freeplay on the slinger when I installed the cover and stuck my finger into the hole for the dampener. Pretty hokey eh? Well the timing gear set only cost like $59 so what do you expect!

Leaving the slinger out greatly increases the potential for oil leaks. I'll pass.

......on any of the gear drives I've done, including the BB Chrysler,....leaving the slinger off is prefered, as more oil will climb onto the gears, which you want,...or you'll be replacing that drive after a few thousand miles,....do replace the front seal with a new quality seal,......gear drives are cool, when set up properly!

The oil slinger does nothing more than cover the front oil seal to keep excess oil from spraying onto it. Whoever told you that was drinking the bong water

I couldn't see it in your second pic?,....or perhaps you did it afterwards, but remember to fold over the pointed ends of the sheet sloted shim behind the 3 cam bolts, this locks the bolts from looseing

Also if anything it would aid in "slinging" oil onto gears for better oiling!

Oh yes thanks for reminding him of that. The stupid direction don't mention that either. Make sure that is the very last thing you do before sealing it up.

Yeah I haven't got that far yet,but thanks for the reminder. Now I am torn on this oil slinger dilemma that's unfolding. Seems easier to leave it off but I have always heard you need it to keep the front seal from leaking. What to do?

keep the slinger & drill a 1/64"(.015") hole in one of the front oil gallery plugs for a constant stream of pressurized oil to keep your gear drive happy(smart move w timing chains also).

Seems that the oiling issue has raised more Q's than A's..

Drilling into the oil galley plugs may be an innovative idea... so..what is the durability like of a gear drive..?

How does the Milodon gear drive compare?
