can someone please tell me the correct total across width on a 426 hemi 172 tooth flywheel. Thanks Tim

I can't help you with a 172T flywheel, but I can supply a picture of a 130 tooth for comparison purposes.
13 1/8" Diameter.

13.75" or 14.75" if you measure across the ring gear.

13.75 across flywheel surface

14.75 across OD of ring gear

If it's a restoration you're stuck with that direct drive setup if it's correct. If it's a driver, ditch it and put a 143t flywheel and a 383/440 cast bell with a mini starter on it.
