I would ask this in the truck forum but this forum seems to get more traffic. Here is goes:
Well I looked under the truck today and gas is running down the frame rail. I dropped the tank and no sign of a rusted fuel line. Going by the location of the wet fuel on the the frame it appears to be leaking at the fuel pump area but there are no sure signs of a bad part. I do know it only leaked when the truck was running so that meaning only when the fuel pump and line were under pressure. I`m putting in a new pump anyhow since I have the tank down and it is the original pump with 160,000 miles. I am putting on a new connector also where it clips on the fuel pump. Any other ideas? I really hate putting this back together without knowing for sure where the leak was. Also I bought a new pump from NAPA and I`m pretty sure it is a Carter pump. The wiring is different from the original. I was going to eliminate the short harness between the pump and truck wiring but the new pump has 6 terminals and the truck harness has 4 terminals. It appears that it will still plug together. Is it a universal type or do I have the wrong pump. They gave me part number P74710m.

what about that hard plastic line that goes from the tank to the SS line on the frame , that may be cracked ?

Wedid most at the shop by pulling the bed.Thats usually the easiest. If it leaks only with running either the feed or return line probally has a leak.We refused to run Carter pumps.Had too many go bad in less than a year.We ran Bosch or factory pumps only. Some pumps are kind of universal but most are a direct replacement.Rocky

John, I ordered a new fuel line from dodge today. I couldn`t find a leak but I`m replacing anyway.
Rocky, I already have the darn pump installed in the tank or I would take it back after hearing about the failure rate for the carter pump. Which line is the return line? I didn`t see one. Only the fuel line and a skinny line that looks like a vapor line or something. It only has a 7/32 hose pushed on it that connects to the black valve on the pump.

when my '96's pump went out (w/a full 35 gal tank, no less) I pulled the bed, worked great. I got an autozone pump, not sure who makes it, but the harness plugged in like OEM. IIRC after 93, there is no return line, the pressure regulator is internal to the pump.

John, it was a small hole in the hard black plastic hose that connects to the pump. I couldn`t see it until I got it out in the direct sunlight. Plus these old eyes can`t see as well as they used to.
