Guys!

I just pulled my 340 in order to replace the rear seal. And the question came up, should I inspect and/or re-torque all of the mains (or just the rear main)?

Or "if it ain't broke", "don't fix it"...

Anyone?

Thanks!

Might as well check rods and mains while your standing there lookin' at them.

With the eng being out yes pull the caps & eyeball the bearings. A basic visual inspection uncovers alot of problems(or in this case will let you sleep better at night knowing that everything is fine)

Fresh motor? High mileage? Noisy? If the rear main seal leak is your only problem, fix it and go.

Somewhat fresh motor, hardly used, probably 1000 or so miles, pulled only to replace the seal.

I haven't done anything, as yet. Still contemplating...

Thanks!

If there was a problem due to torque you would have seen it already. I'm a big fan of not disturbing things that dont need it so I'd just leave well enough alone and fix the seal.

Well, art is art, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water! And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does. Now, uh... Now you tell me what you know.

I'll fall into this line of thinking as well. Especially if its and older motor.

I agree, leave well enough alone. No sense in opening up a fresh bearing. Why would a fresh engine have a bad rear main if I may ask?

Great question!

I had a leak in the rear of the engine and I "ASSUMED" that the rear seal was installed backwards.

But... it wasn't, so...

1) Either the oil pan gasket wasn't installed with enough precision (read as RTV?)

OR

2) (This is my favorite)... Apparently, the rear main in the 340, has to have some RTV applied to it, and there didn't appear to be any applied.
