Hey Guys,

I attempted to install my Pertronix kit 1382 tonight in my 69 Charger. It has a Prestolite dual point and I "think" I followed the instructions correctly.

However, I'm not sure which side of the ballast resistor to run the red wire to. Instructions say to run it to the ignition switch side of the resistor. When I look at my engine diagram, I can't tell which side the resistor that is.

Also, the supplied wire is too short to reach the resistor. How are most installs done? Do you splice into the harness on the valve cover, or extend the wire up to the resistor? How would you then connect it to the resistor with existing connectors there?

I elongated the wire and tried just sticking it in the holes of the resistor terminal, but the car wouldn't start. It would turn over and when it Let go of the key it shuddered, just like they will do with a bad resistor.

Any help would be appreciated !!

I'm assuming you got a little red module as apart of the kit and replaced the points set-up?

If so, the red and black wires that come out of the distributor go to the coil. Red to POS. Black to NEG. Depending on which kit you bought, you may have to bypass the ballast resistor depending on the loaded voltage of the coil.

Not familiar w pertronix installs but for switched 12V just drop a wire down to the valve cover harness & tap into the blue alt field lead(if you have the later 2 field terminal alt) & if not run it up to the ballast resistor opposite the side that has the blue/brown wires together & isnt the ballast bypassed on these deals?

Yes, the kit came with the module and I pulled the points and condensor.

I hooked up the red wire to the positive side of the coil and it still won't start. It turns over and when I let off the ignition, it shudders and stops.

When I installed the module, it seemed like the little countersunk screw's threads were too short. I had to push down a little harder than I thought normal to make it connect and screw in. Could that be an issue?

Ok, silly question here, could the issue be it needs retimed? The rotor button was pointing in the same place when I put it back on. Everything should still be set, right?
Thanks !

Thanks Robert, with this kit you keep the resistor. I have the single field alernator.

I'm assuming you connected the BLACK wire from the module to the NEG terminal of the coil? You didn't remove any wires going to the coil, did you? You should have 3 wires total at the coil terminals. 2 at the POS side, and 1 at the NEG side.

No, you don't need to re-time the engine.

The other times I've installed the Pertronix it came with a gap tool to verify the gap between pickup and rotor. The dual point kit didn't have that, and as it turned out we had to re-jigger the holes to get that gap closer to actually fire the motor. POS cost me 1/2 day on the dyno *&^%ing around.

This is the pertronix one kit. Seems that I installed the magnet sleeve upside down using the picture on the box as a reference. DOH !

Flipped it over and it fired right off.

Thanks for the help fellas !!!
