I just bought a 68 Charger and someone has put a 400 engine in the car. It has 71 400 stamped on the engine block under the distributor. According to Year One it has about 190-235 HP.According to Summit it's a 6.6 liter engine so I thought it should have more HP. It has a Edelbrock performance series 750 CFM carb and a Edelbrock Torker 383 intake. DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW MUCH hp this motor really has and if the motor can be stroked or anything I would like to get about 400- 500 HP engine in the car and was just wondering if I need to just Replace the engine.
Thanks for any info!

cubic inches don't always mean horsepower with factory stock engines. The 400 was a really low compression smogger engine...but don't toss it aside for something else. They can be stroked...but for a street car, a stock stroke 400 with some higher compression pistons (not a lot of options!) can really make some good power...

However, shooting for your goal of 4-500 HP...you might be better off going the stroker route...a lot of stroker kits out there...

If you're going to throw it away, throw it in my garbage
J/K.. you are too far away. Just to let you know, you may have the most desirable wedge block dodge ever built. Look on the casting # on the side of the block and see if it ends in 230. Also report back what the casting DATE is. The 400 is the best foundation for a stroker build and you may have the best one of those.

400s can EASILLY drop in a 440 crank and you suddenly get 451 cubic inches, because the 400 has a bore that's .090 larger than a 383, although other than that, the 383 and 400 are pretty much identical. the 440 bore is .070 larger than a 383, or .020 smaller than a 400.

there are kits that you can pick up for about $1800 that will allow you to make that low compression, dog of a 400 into a high compression 500 inch monster. pick out the right heads and cam, and you're looking at an easy 600-650 hp on pump gas.

total cost to build such a monster, is probably about $6K though, after block clean up machine work, plus clearancing if needed, stroker kit, heads, intake, cam, headers, carb, etc.

or you can get some aftermarket or custom pistons to get the compression up in your 400, pick out a good cam, buy a set of $800 aluminum stealth heads from 440source, and you're looking at 450-500 hp for about $3,000
