It ALL depends on WHERE you race?? Track, your done!! Street, you have a chance!!
Street
I'd think it would be the other way around. Street = terrible traction. either way I don't think you have enough, even if you were in an A-body you'd have an uphill battle. What's your car weigh? 3600-3800? that's a lot of weight for a 340 to move out
depends on the street...seen some RWD cars hook like crazy on the street, now the question is...Do you really need to beat this kid? If you can go to the track sometime he is running and see how he drives and what the car runs, then see what yours runs if you dont know already. If he is faster get some gears, tire, and some other items that were suggested. Oh and if you have full interior, spare, and other things...it can always come out to save a little wieght
Goodluck, hope you teach him that 40 year old technology can still hang

I did the first few times I saw it, but it kept coming back to the top, taunting me... Plus the question was answered about 15 different ways, all with the OP coming in second...

I went for a ride in the kids subaru and I doubt it has the upgrades he says; the only one I know it has is the exhaust. Car didn't pull nearly as hard as I expected. Im guessing just a stock wrx with the exhaust.

first thing i would do is ditch those 3.23's and go with atleast 3.91's (if its a street car and you want good compromise gear that is the one to have imo)...also, those chokemasters are probably gonna eat a tenth of your times, plus they sound like [Edited by Moparts - Keep it clean]- get a nice straight through like a dynomax, pypes, borla, etc....also, what kind and size tires are you running? mt e/t street radials are some of the best out there right now...i dont know much about jap cars, but say you have a shot at him...people always go by what the cars specs are, but if the guy cant drive for [Edited by Moparts - Keep it clean] or conditions are bad then it doesnt matter how much power the car has...good luck man...theres a guy in a fully tuned wrx who comes down my street every day staring at me workin on my scamp and whippin through the gears so i can hear his blowoff valve...cant wait to follow him down the street and lay him a spanking too

BF Goodrich Radial T/A's 225/70-14 (only size they had at the time and I needed tires) so I know I won't be able to hook that good. Hoping to get some 245/60's soon.
