Does anyone here know of anyone doing a V8 conversion on the Toyota Supra. What i,m really interested in is the rear suspension set up.I plan on using a Ford 9" with ladderbars trying to utilize as much of the stock floor pan as possible although connecting the subframes. Any info would be a big help in getting this project started.

The V8 part of the conversion should be fairly straight forward. If you're wondering about what to do in the rear I suggest finding a good toyota forum. There are some guys putting out serious HP numbers with the V6 turbo supra motors, find out what they are doing with their rear ends. I'm sure they've got a system and I doubt it involves a ford rear...

x2

I believe they're an IRS rear end; use an 8" center section very similar to the 1T and 4WD pickups (in fact, guys swap in Turbo Supra center sections into their live axles to get the LSD).

You may be doing some major fab back there...

Seduce the attractive, and charm the rest. ****** 489 C.I.D., roller cam, aftermarket heads, tunnel ram, stock '54 Dodge rear axle assembly: which of these doesn't belong?

I like the idea, My son has a 1994 supra and every time I look at his car, I think how good a V8 powered one would be. Have you bought the car yet, if not I can get you some measurements engine bay etc. Rob.

ya we are pulling the engine as we speak. His dad works at a Toyota dealership and give him the shop manual for the car which has every measurement needed. The hardest thing of the swap I believe will be making the headers.

Theres one around here with a small chevy running high 5's and still has the stock IRS in it, don't know the year for sure but it's the heavy one from late 80's early 90's.

You will be ok length wise in the engine comp but it may not be wide enough, In a celica I had the width between the struts was about 1/2" narrower than a 440 with stock early B manifolds.

high hp from a turbo 6 is totally different than high hp from a big block, keep that in mind. most of those 6s are probably spinning up towards 10K rpm, that big block will probably make three times the torque off the line as the turbod guys do.

I really don't understand removing an engine VERY capable of producing over 700 reliable horsepower on the stock bottom end. There are many transmission options as well. The stock IRS center section is very beefy and will hold up to an automatic build but you might want to step up to a Dana 60 center section that I have seen in some Toyota builds.

some really good arguments that could be made: better hp/$, more torque, lower engine stress = (likely) longer longevity, old school fuel/spark tuning might be easier, cheap project car, good part availability in wrecking yards, rack and pinion steering, aerodynamics, light weight.

i can probably think of roughly the same # of "cons" though...

just curious, using elephant ears to spread the weight across sheet metal?

custom exhaust, radiator, steering shaft, suspension...all is a "must", and the cost adds up to an amount that goes WAAAY beyond resale value.

at some distant point in my youth i dreamed of a dry lakes racer that utilized a late 80s RX7 900 hp, supercharged 392 hemi stuffed in a mid-engine mount. i was very young, all i could do is dream of the potency of the finished product -- in retrospect, i downplayed the technical hurdles.
