Might matter how many of those 55 gallon drums of 20W 50 they have and want to move out of inventory. The standard oil these days is 5W 20, or thinner. Probably not much market for the 20W 50, and if they have a boat load of those drums full of it, you have to drop the price enough to move them out.

Wonder what the ZDDP content is ??? Shipping will be $$$$ but at .25 a quart

my bet is that it is a typo, that aside, there are a lot of people out there that think they need 20w50 oil, most of them don't and those that do either need to rebuild their engine, or learn how to build one properly in the first place.

Depends on the clearances the motor was built with IMO. that is, if one watches their oil pressure

The problem is Oil is like religion, and certain religions dictate zero deviation.

I have an Austin Mini and the manual calls for 20W50...BUT the engine oil sump IS the transmission, so the oil's got to be pretty thick to endure highway speeds in a 4-speed manual box and still lubricate the engine. They also recommend oil changes every 2000 miles.

Yep, 20W50 was the factory recommended oil for Dad's 911.

If your clearances are so loose you need 20w50 to get good pressure you built it wrong. .001" clearance per inch of journal diameter has been the standard for a long time and it runs just fine on 30w oil.

Obviously, I am not talking about a Very high hp race only engine running exotic fuels here, but this isn't the race forum either.

As for the example of OEM's calling for 20w50, exactly how old are those rides? My 51 Plymouth calls for 30w, didn't have multi-weight oil then, but as soon as multi-weight became available the book called for 10w30.

Any oil thicker than needed to maintain proper oil pressure is just wasting HP, fuel and adding extra stress on the oil pump drive system. Potentially leading to cam twist (especially on setups like the LA, front cam drive, rear oil pump drive) affecting cam and ignition timing. Guess you could consider it a poor mans VVT. lol.
