Hello all, can anyone help me identify what this 8 3/4 came out of or from what year it’s from
? I thought maybe it was a 489 casing and it was a defect b/c it doesn’t have a “9” at the end Thank you!!

It's a 489 , the last digit of the casting number is MIA ... 489 had that large 9 cast on them.

does it have the caps , those are not a one size fits all , if it doesn't have them it's going to be $$$ to put another set on.

To me without them it's scrap, I just sold a few empty 489's , with caps , for 35 bucks a pop

Thanks all!! Hi yes I have the caps and the internals to go with it. It had a 3.23 Non-Posi Unit in it. I took it apart to add a Sure Grip unit to it

Did the caps get marked before removing? They're side specific.

If not, bolt them oon and see if the adjustment threads line up. Switch sides and repeat.

To answer the original question, I think that may be a pre 62 8-3/4 housing but not 100% on that. I do know they used different casing numbers in the earlier years
I am not sure of any differences either way shruggy Hopefully you did mark the bearing caps so they get back on their respective sides wink

I think the early ones up to 64 were 1820654 and small pinion
