My son is thinking of selling my old 1970 Challenger R/T that was gifted to him from me for a graduation gift in 2007 and I bought it in 1979.. The 4 Speed and Dana are factory to the car but when I pulled the engine to rebuild it the numbers don't match.. The engine is a 1970 440 HP but not original... I do not have a build sheet either. Does have the door sticker, Dash Vin tag and the fender tag, .radiator stamp and cowl and trunk lip stamp.. Car has been parked for a long time but every year I start it and take it around the block.. Tires have turned to Junk so I haven't taken it around the block this year but have started it and it does run. It's not a SE or a T/A even though it has those factory parts on it. It also has some cracked out rear fender flairs not factory, it also has a broken tip of the Speedo needle .. This car was restored in 1988 but not back to stock but to the way I cruised in on 15th and 16th downtown Denver back in the day. I have put around 10,000 miles on it since 1992 on this car. The top has bubbles under and around the rear trim.. Trunk floor pans and floor boards all around are solid, and frame rails are solid. My son is trying to buy a house here in Colorado is the reason for selling it and he's not in a hurry, will move it before March if it will help him buy a house.. If I wasn't retired I would buy it back from him.. I will get some good images of it tomorrow.. But here are a few.. Looking obviously as much as he can.. Tell me what you think.

So how many V02 R/Ts are on record?
Bet not many were U codes.

I'm thinking this one was customer spec'd.

Neat car as originally spec'ed .
black painted top, luggage rack, Super Trak Pak, 4 spd.

Was dash replaced at some point? Looks like rivets holding VIN plate on.
Tag appears original.

As is condition, assuming it's pretty much rust free, and won't take much to get roadworthy I'll kick in a WIW of $40K.
Do you have the original hood or any other parts?

it's a cool car...I love U-code Challengers.
But, I just don't see $50k
If you just take care of a few things and enjoy it, that would be fun.

A restoration is going to open a can of worms with as much as the car has been tweaked and modified over the years.
Vinyl top and window added.
Spoiler and hood added.
Repaints...

just my 2 cents

Benefit! I'd add wide Cragar SS wheels and some fat Mickey Ts and call it awesome!

Running and driving, $40k and I have two buyers lined up for it.
Cosmetic restoration would bump it up to $46k.
Full suspension rebuild, engine detailing, cut n' buff would bring $53k.
If it was an auto, I would offer up all my projects for sale and put it back into hibernation.

Yeah, I bet there are 2 buyers lined up for it a 40K!
I bet there are a whole lot more! Hell, I'd be in line at $40K!

I'm thinking a bit higher. I wouldn't be surprised by 60s or 70s.
Sorry, a running driving E body 4 spd Dana U code?
Yeah, a lot more than 40.

Serious question-
What would this car bring if it was restored to OE Gold level status by some bored money-is-no-object collector?
-1 No buildsheet because LA assembly
-2 Wrong block

Would it hit 6 figures?

I must have something "Wrong" with me. When i look at cars for sale i think of what i would need to do with it past what the average joe does. I have some new in box High Jackers. A,Summit Racing discount code for some Cragar 5 spokes, new set of M-T tires. Lots of #600 3-M wet/dry sand paper. Rolls of 3-M fine line tape, House of color silver and gold candy base. Some gallons of clear. And my buddy stocks many colors of Kandy concentrate colors. And ya can mix them together as well to save a few bucks. He did a car all striped up like 1976 a year ago. Wow was it cool. He has done them since way back. Lots of ultra fine to sand the clear when buffed out. Lots andvlots of interior, exterior and engine bay detail stuff and a 26 year old son with lots of time on his hands.
Someone else buy that car please.......

I have sold 2 70 U Code 4 speed 4.10 Dana Number matching Challengers in the last couple years.
An FE5 and FC7 car.
They were pretty nice cars, not restored but repainted and kept up.

I know cars have gone up some but I think 40-45K tops unless someone really had to have it.

Just my opinion.

Agreed. may have change the pad when it was restored. If all else is there minus t the build sheet, I'd pop the windshield a nd fix that issue lickety split.
Fender flares gotta go IMO

Just and FYI: That steering wheel thing is useless, a hacksaw will go right through that wheel in less than a minute. wink

The math on this stuff is kinda perverse. Go shopping with 90-100k and you can get some really sweet stuff. Cars with way more than that spent on them.

Take a car like this. It will take metric tons of money to restore. Yet I can see a guy that wants one ponying up 50-55k, despite the fact it would be waayyy cheaper to buy the 90k car already done. But maybe that guy will enjoy it as is with some tlc and general clean up.

It’d be worth spending the time or paying the money to get the paint looking the best it can, and probably some tires. Anything you can do to make it a real driver will bring out the wallets. Videos are a must these days, that’s just the expectation now.

Well I'm back with some more info and images.. After getting a good look at the car today it is in need of 2 quarter panels as this car deserves it. If some one out there is missing there numbers matching engine and this is it please reach out to me.. The Dash tag has never been off the car, and it has some glued on carpet as the dash is cracked around the speaker. I installed the rear SE plug many a year ago so that is how it got there.. I would like to thank all that have posted up with their input, no mater what. The car is what it is.. Also noticed that someone placed the jack on the K frame and the oil pan.. So it has a bend in the pan.
