Ok here is the scenerio. My father has a 69 coronet 2 door currently with a 4bbl 318. The rear is a 7-1/4 (I believe, need to double check). I have a 4 door 69 coronet sunday cruiser with a 318 2bbl, but mine has the 8-3/4 rear. My father is planning an upgrade to a 440 auto combo, so the 7-1/4 definately will need to be swapped out. Originally I wanted to do a simple rear end swap with our two cars, but the 7-1/4 makes me a little leery of doing so. Now, here is my question. We do have a 8-3/4 rear out of a chrysler station wagon that we could use in his coronet, but it will need to be slightly narrowed to stock width. What kind of a shop will do this? When I call around, general answers are rebuilds, services, etc. But no narrowing really. Where do I need to look for this service? When I call the speed shops, all I get is stuff for "NOSS", big bling rims, low profile tires, and fart pipes for imports. I wouldn't mind cutting the axles and housing down, but where to go? Or should I just do the swap between the two cars and see what happens? suggestions, comments, etc? Thanks in advance eight

Since yours is a 2bbl sunday cruiser I'd just swap yours for his. His 7&1/4 will be plenty adequate for what you have. If not Moser in Portland Indiana does narrowing/perch rewelding & maybe some offset rims would let the wagon 8&3/4 fit as is(except for the spring perch width probably needing to be changed). PS a 7&1/4 has 9 bolts(Some later ones MAY have 10) & if it's not a 7&1/4 thats even better

7-1/4 in a B body? I never thought they came that way; (I could be wrong though) I woulda thunk an 8-1/4 would be the "weakest" they'd go there that the 7-1/4 was an "A body thing" in those days.
never seen one either, either way if you swaped the two you'd be ok. If it were me I'd look for a b-body unit and get a set of gears that match your 440 set-up.

3 place doctordiff here on the board moser enginering currie enterprize in olando FL the all can hook you up with narrowing and resplining axle or custom axle packages would be easyer to find a housing I have a couple diff one..how wide you need flange to flange on the housing trucks are same as c-bodys and there are early B-body and later b-body housing and station wagons along with e-body which may fit I am willing to bet you gots an 8 3/8 thats called an 8 1/4 most times 9 bolt in cover for 7 1/4 10 bolts on cover for 8 3/8 called 8 1/4 12 bolts on cover for 9 1/4 and cover is octogone shaped 12 bolt on cover D-60

I looked under the car yesterday after work, it appears to be an 8-1/4.
I doubt this is stock for this car but who knows?
Anyway, this should be sufficient for my 2bbl 318 sunday cruiser.
We'll see how it turns out

yes it would be stock for it yes they would swap out and be fine they 8 3/4 would be the one for a 440 so thats a good swap IMO that 8 3/8 will hold up just fine with the 318 cruzer you can beef it some with gears and a suregrip unit also

yes, i realize the 8-3/4 does not have a rear cover. I have rebuilt several.
my main question was about the other rear end and if it would work, I am not that familiar with the 8-1/4. I've learned a lot today, thats for sure.
If I ever come across an 8-3/4, I would swap that in a heartbeat, but for the time being and money being tight, I am looking for the cheapest option for the time being.
thanks!
