A neighbor of mine might let go of the 70 challenger his mom left him. He's early 20's, has zero interest in it and needs a car to drive. Dad and stepmom want their garage back. I want it as a hot rod for my niece.
70 but has a 71 grill, 318 column auto, flat hood. Haven't looked it over real well but assume it's pretty solid with not a lot of rust but has some mud. Hasn't run in years but they did start it and move it around when they moved in.
I can only offer him about 8k but think that's probably pretty short, I don't want to steal it from him.
What do these go for these days? shruggy
Thank you.

Have you asked the young man what he's looking to get? Maybe you could work a deal where you buy a newer car for him & trade it for the Challenger? Win-win. Hope it works out for you.

As mentioned, I would ask him what his price is first. This way you won't worry about insulting him and see what he is thinking. The trade idea is pretty good too as used car prices should be falling, Though I would not want to get stuck with another car if he changes his mind.

8k would be very cheap, even rust buckets are trying to get that. I like the 71 grille better than the 70 too. Still 70 taillights?

Let us know if you get it and post some pics.

Thanks for the replies, I'll feel him out a little better but some of his relatives want it too, car shows and barret jackson ya know. Told him it would stay right next door to his parents and he could drive it when sorted, maybe that'll help and I'll buy him a low mile charger.
I like the 71 stuff better too, it's in my head it's a wide lip but I need to look at it again and better. I just looked up the vin kinda bummed, 70 stripper v8.
I haven't seen the back or under the hood, they have a lot of stuffff.
If/when they mention maybe selling it again I'll dig around better and take some pics.

They've mentioned not really trusting their relatives so would be fair to him assuming solid rolling, probably running car?
Are we at the 20k area for these? Not a lot of examples for sale to compare. yellow
Thanks guys.

There was a '72 for sale around here in the last 6 months, '70 front end, different hues of flat orange (think orange primer) with a lot of over-spray, jacked up interior, that the guy was asking $26K for. I never bothered to go see it as you would have been upside down in it immediately. Don't know if it sold or what he got for it if it did. IMO, without a lot more info on the car you are looking into, $20K seems pretty ambitious. '71 grille is a deduction for me but to each his own.

Without pics, can't really put a price on it. If he has a lot of parts too, that changes things some too.

Another way you might be able to see what he is thinking, ask him if he is interested in another type car. Ask make. model, year...then price those out. This could get you a ballpark number?

I was thinking $12k ish if not too much mud but IMO greatly depends on that.

Facts are stubborn things.
