I'm trying to locate a car I used to have.
I have the license plate number but not the Vin.

Anyone know of a way to trace it back.

Do you have any old insurance records or DMV records from when you owned the car? They usually contain the VIN #

Or remember who you insured it through. My old State Farm Agent is still in business and at his same location, and probably has old records on cars I used to own.

Good luck with that. Most states don't keep records of non-registered vehicles much more then 7 years, maybe not even that long. Did the plates follow the car in KY back then? In IL, the plate was with the person, when you sold the car, the new owner had to get new plates. Once the old plates were not reregistered when they expired, after 7 years IL cleared the plate number to be reissued to someone else. Then none of that old info concerning that plate would be available.

I have records from when I started driving, all the insurance documents since then had the VIN on them. I think it is time to purge before I move later this year... laugh2

Get a licensed Private Investigator to check the plate number. They should be able to find all the info currently available on the vehicle. They have access to pretty much the same info law enforcement does but won't get in trouble for looking it up like a cop buddy would. I had a PI look up a long expired plate number from a 65 Barracuda that I bought out of GA and he found the registered owner of the car when the plate was valid. That led me to being able to get paperwork from that person to get a valid NC title. Hope it works for you. up
