We have two working dogs, an 80 pound Catahoula Leopard Dog and a 60 pound Border Collie, they are tough, rough and tumble dogs with more energy, speed and stamina then should be legal. We are old and therein is the start of the problem, but we also need them for their working abilities here on the farm.
So the wife takes them out Sunday morning about 7:30 in 19° weather so they can do some work and then they get to hike the mountain property for awhile. I was still asleep, didn't get up until 20 after 9. I stumble to the kitchen for coffee and I see the big dog scratch at the back door. Not unusual she comes back a little before the rest of pack. I let her in, don't see anyone else, ok. About twenty minutes later I see the BC out back on the patio, don't see the wife, well that is unusual. I go out, still in underwear mind you, and walk around the corner of the garage to find my wife with two sticks standing there looking like she just got run over by truck after running a marathon. She can hardly walk. So I grab her, help her the rest of the way to the house, she feels frozen, I sit her down in a chair, get a blanket and ask what happened. She tells me she was out back, the dogs were running and playing and Bob, the BC ran into her left leg head on at full speed. "Dropped me like a rock, I screamed oh f***k then laid on the ground for about thirty minutes before I could get up. This is the same woman that already has had a broken back and a spinal fusion from a pitbull attack mind you, she managed to get on her right leg, grab her walking pole and another stick close by and hobble for 45 minutes the eighth mile back to the house. She spends the rest of the day in bed and says she'll go the doctor tomorrow if she isn't better.
Monday morning and her left knee is swollen to twice the size of her right knee, and she can't put any weight on that leg. I told her we are going to skip the doctor and go straight to the emergency room.
So turns out she has a fracture in the calf bone at the top where the knee joint is. The bone is not out of place though so that is some good news. She will have to be off that leg for eight weeks. We go see the orthopedic surgeon Thursday.
Damn I feel bad for her. My work load has now tripled, she does a lot around here with the chickens, dogs, house and property so I will have to attend to all that plus take care of her too. I don't mind though, I love her.

Ah, no, that is definitely not good.
Given the story & background, though, it could be worse (not that it's much consolation).
Wonder if you could get some help around the place, or with the bride ?
Hopefully knee surgery isn't needed.

I hate it when stuff like that happens!
We have had some life changing events happen around here over the 46 (soon to be 47) years we have been married. You round up as much help as you can, and carry on. I know your pretty new to your area, but maybe its a good time to reach out to your neighbors. They may be more helpful then you think.
We will put up a prayer for you this evening.

Thank you. Yeah, could have been a lot worse, I'm thankful for that. She's a trooper though.

Neighbors? There are three houses on this mile long road, we are in the middle so neighbors are half a mile in either direction. Nice people, but mostly never home anyway.
We'll get by one way or another.

Saw that happen at a dog park a few years ago. A 50-something woman, that was about 5' tall and 90lbs was there with her red lab, she was telling me about the rareness of that breed when it comes running around the corner at full speed and hits her, she literally flew up and landed on her head. Rattled her cage pretty good!

The blessing is that she made it home before she froze to death. She had a lot going against her in that scenario.

I broke my knee last Jan 28th. Long story short, while on crutches for 6 weeks, I couldn't even carry a plate, coffee cup, whatever...to the table from the kitchen...let alone any other routine chores. My wife, God bless her, had to do EVERYTHING! So I know what you're talking about when you say your workload has increased.

Again, I'm glad there's going to be a happy ending to this chapter.
Hug the dogs...and buy that doggone BC some glasses!

Guitar - all the best to her & I hope for a speedy recovery for her.

I know how you feel - my wife has suffered badly through 3 shoulder surgeries (same shoulder) over the past 2 years, & now needs the BIG repair - a reverse replacement - scheduled for this May. Neither of us are looking forward to this! Holy crap, don't things get any easier?

I hope she has a speedy recovery! I was moving an eight row planter the other day and my wife stumbled over a piece of wire and fell. She wasn't hurt. She was very lucky she didn't break anything!

As others mentioned, I'm so glad it wasn't worse, although sounds like she's in for a lot of pain and you a lot of work. I hope somehow you find some help taking care of her and all your chores! Maybe a family member can visit for some time and help?

Hang in there buddy.

Getting old sucks. Everything takes longer to heal. We sold our farm in 2020 due to the work required to keep things running smoothly, so I understand when you say your workload increased. Wishing her a speedy recovery.
