Then there is the new gen hemis with powdered metal rods- the basturd child of forged rods.

Same as the 360 by 1973. Chrysler seemed to consolidate with the beefier rod about the same time they went to the cast crank on the 318. The earlier rods were shared with the 273 engine and looked more like a Cheeby rod. All were forged until the Gen III stuff as noted.

Anyone ever break a thin/early 318 rod that wasnt bolt failure related?

Ive seen a few, all were very high miles lots of sludge and spun bearings. No broken bolts just the shoulder where the bolt head/shoulder is.

i know a lot of SO CA NHRA stock class racers that used stock OEM 318 rods in 340 and 360 motors in stock to reduce the rotating mass before NHRA allow them to use better aftermarkets replacement rods shruggy
light weight pistons and new rod bolts and resize the big end after swapping out the bolts and run them up twocents
