Years ago I read a letter to a muscle car magazine that had done an article about the mustang.
The letter writer was someone connected to the film crew and had some specific knowledge about both cars. He noted that the mustang got lots if mods to keep up with the charger. Including engine work and chassis reinforcement. The charger got the aforementioned springs and shocks and not much else.

Amazingly, just in time for the 50th anniversary of the movie the car driven by Steve McQueen and the wrecked/stripped camera car both turned up. The good car was in someone's garage, the other in a junkyard in Mexico. Both had Marti reports.

The Charger and Mustang were prepared by Max Balchowsky, who also prepared the five Challengers in the original Vanishing Point. According to a story I read years ago (probably the same article you're referring to) Balchowsky said that the Mustangs needed a lot of suspension and engine work to keep up to the Charger, which was basically stock. I did see the article years ago where the guy found the Charger camera car. Cool that it still exists.
Wonder what happened to the blue Charger use in the Christine movie? Not as famous as the Bullit Charger, but still a notable find if someone has it.

Mike. Quite possible that Max wrote the letter. I never read the original article about the Mustang. The time frame was mid late 80s, I was 10 or so, not wealthy enough for magazine subscriptions yet!

Does this mean it was the 330(5) HP 383 Charger lighting the tires, running away and hiding from the 320 HP 390 Mustang?

talking about the 390 ferd engine, back in my junkyard ownership days, i traded a pair of VW tires for a 67 galaxy 500 2drht, that had the 390/C6 combo. the guy we got the galaxy from said the engine was blown, or close to it, because it popped and banged and didn't run right. after being towed to the yard, we got to looking it over, and discovered the points had closed up. adjusting the point gap helped some, but it was still under powered. cranking way more advance into it [without using a timing light] really woke it up, just like adding 100hp ! it ran so good, and in reality, the car was very nice, we painted it and put it on the lot. the girl that bought it was very happy for quite a few years afterward, until her boyfriend [now her husband] crashed the car, and back to our yard it went...........
